Summer is slowly but surely slipping away, and with that comes the eventual end of BBQs, pool parties, and muggy basement shows. While autumn is a pretty rad season, most of us are trying in vain to hold onto the last remnants of summer in any way we can. For some, that’s freezing the fuck out of one’s self at the beach. For others, it’s using up the dregs of BBQs past from the back of the fridge in an effort to pull together some sort of  “last hurrah!” smorgasbord. For me, it’s blasting crust and grind as loud as my car stereo will allow, windows down, scaring the bejezzus out of the townsfolk as I zip by. For some reason, grind just calls to mind summer for me, and I find myself in this situation year after year as the leaves start to turn. Currently on heavy rotation is Defeatist’s new album Tyranny of Decay and yes, my friends — it’s been hitting the proverbial spot.

Magrudergrind and Despise You are teaming for a too-brief tour this September, and while I know that a very small amount of you live in locations that will allow you to attend, I wanna make sure that those of you who can go to one of these shows do go. Because these bands are awesome, and doubly so live. Hopefully you already know that, or are open to learning it, ’cause it’s undeniable truth.

So, to review: Magrudespiseyou tour, MetalSucks readers who live in the area attend. Simple simple simple.

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of seeing local turks Castevet at perfectly scuzzy diy venue The Acheron in sunny Bushwick, USA, and they did not disappoint.

Fierce, unique, angular, thunderous…..much like my ex-wife, the band tore me a new one and left me wanting much, much more.

Thankfully I have the opportunity for further gluttonous punishment, since Castevet is back at the same venue TONIGHT TONIGHT TONIGHT with Xaddax, Defeatist, and Beantown bruisers Phantom Glue — as far as I know Vince will be joining me in my region of Brooktown for a debaucherous night of fury, frenzy, and homemade fires (pre-game at my place?)…….rumor has it the Tin Man AND the Scarecrow will be at this one too, so you’re pretty much guaranteed a ridiculous time.  Lock up your daughters’ daughters!!

Fuck the Facts are doing one last tour this year before they start writing their next album, and you should really go see them, ’cause Fuck the Facts are fucking awesome. Plus, it seems like, whenever possible, they’re doing these shows with other excellent bands — the NYC gig, for example, features both Magrudergrind and Defeatist, who are, respectively, totally killer in their own right. But I’d go even if they weren’t playing with other cool bands. In fact, I’m tempted to get on a plane and go to Sydney, NS, just to see a band called “Fuck the Facts” play a venue called “Christ Church Hall.” ‘Cause, Jesus, that’s kinda funny.

Last weekend I finally got to see Magrudergrind play live at Cakeshop. I meant to write a review but didn’t get around to it last week, and now our friend Justina Villaneuva, who made her way through the intense pit of the little basement show to get a closer than I did because I’m a pussy, wrote a pretty detailed review for Noisecreep. If you wanna read about how awesome the show was – and it was awesome – you should read that.

No,  this isn’t a show review – just a long-winded way of bringing up NYC’s own Defeatist, who went on right before Magrudergrind. I wasn’t previously familiar with this band, but both Rich Hallford Brooklyn Vegan‘s Black Bubblegum encouraged me to get to the show early and check ‘em out. And I’m glad I did.

This is filthy, deformed, venomous grind. It almost sounds like some inbred rednecks are taunting a crying baby, except that Defeatist aren’t inbred rednecks, they’re pissed-off New Yorkers, which means they’re smarter and care even less about their fellow members of the human race. The band’s MySpace page describes their sound as “A fucking mess,” and that’s a pretty accurate description. If you have love in your heart, this band is not for you.

Check these dudes out. They’re playing Maryland Deathfest in May; hopefully there will be other opportunities to see them live before then.

Last night I had the privilege of attending the latest in the monthly series of Pitchfork’s Show No Mercy metal shows in Brooklyn, featuring Stats, Defeatist, Unearthly Trance, and Minsk supporting Keelhaul. I arrived a fan of Minsk — who certainly did not disappoint with their epic blend of doom, prog, sludge and punk — but I left a newly converted fan of Keelhaul, whose razor-tight set of angular post-metal riffs justly lived up to show promoter Brandon Stosuy’s description as “muscular.” Keelhaul absolutely fucking killed it, their furious Coalesce-on-steroids onslaught leaving me wondering how this band had slipped beneath my radar for so long.
