CHIMAIRA NEWS ROUND-UP: MARK HUNTER HURTS HIS ANKLE, NEW MEMBERS ANNOUNCED, FREE REMIX EP

Tuesday, January 3rd, 2012 at 12:00pm by

So it looks like Chimaira kept pretty busy while we were away.

First: as announced in November, last week’s twelfth annual Chimaira Christmas marked the band’s final performance with guitarists Rob Arnold and Matt DeVries. And, unfortunately, DeVries’ parting gift to vocalist Mark Hunter – who is now the band’s sole remaining original member — was to knock him over in the middle of “The Age of Hell,” resulting in Hunter taking a nasty spill and spraining his ankle. You can watch video of the incident below courtesy of The PRP (the fall comes just after the 1:18 mark), and see a photo of Hunter’s swollen ankle here.

Potentially better news is that while Hunter had thus far remained mum on his plans for Chimaira’s future, the band has since announced replacements for Arnold and DeVries.

DIAMOND PLATE ARRIVE “AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS”

Friday, June 17th, 2011 at 11:20am by

Much like fellow Midwesterners Lazarus A.D., Illinois’ Diamond Plate refuse to just be another re-thrash band with no new ideas. They’ve always been a little more brutal than the froo-froo “I just found out about Exodus” crap that’s been forcefed down metalheads’ throats since about 2006 or so; their music is punctuated by beyond-their-age songwriting abilities, and structured solos that give life to their music.

This blogger ordered the group’s self-released Relativity EP on a whim for like $5 after what might have been a few too many at the pub and a subsequent late-night internet cruising session. And this blogger fucking loved it. So it was nice to see Earache pick the band up in October of last year. (Apparently head honcho Digby Pearson dug the band for quite some time and personally offered them the deal. No big surprise, I suppose.)

Now, gearing up for the release of the band’s debut full-length, Generation Why?, Earache has launched a stream of the song “At The Mouth Of Madness” (above). The album, which was produced by Neil Kernon (Judas Priest, Nevermore, Deicide), is out August 29, and apparently they’re hitting the road with Kittie and fellow Chi-towners Dirge Within later this summer. Dates after the jump!

OTHER AWARDS THAT YOU COULD NAME AFTER HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010 at 2:30pm by

Our friend Amy Sciarretto from Noisecreep reports that Birmingham City University (in England, not Alabama) is naming an award after everyone’s favorite heavy metal grandpa: the Ozzy Osbourne Development Award “will be bestowed upon the student that makes the most significant progress on their degree in the Media and Communication/Music Industry degree.” I assume that the Osbourne family donated a nice chunk of change to get the award named after him, but this doesn’t really make that much sense to me. For one thing, I don’t know if Ozzy has really shown any musical development in, oh, the last hundred years or so, and as much as I admire a lot of his past work, you’ll never convince me that the bulk of the credit doesn’t lie with his collaborators – especially given that the dude doesn’t actually play an instrument. And beyond that, fuck has Ozzy got to do with media and communication? If we’re talking about his work with various reality shows and what have you, well, then, shouldn’t the award be named after Sharon, since we have her to thank for Ozzy’s wonderful non-music endeavors.

But whatever. This piece of news got me thinking: what other awards could we name after heavy metal musicians? And so, after the jump, my suggestions for new university kudos monikered in honor of various other members of the heavy metal community.

Monday, February 8th, 2010 at 11:29am by

So let’s say you’re Fear Factory. You’re in the headlines a lot these days because your founding guitar player has returned to the fold and you’ve recorded an album that ranks with your best. You have to go do your first big U.S. comeback tour. Who do you announce as your support acts? How about Winds of Plague, Dirge Within, and Periphery?

Wait… what?

THIS JUST IN: AXL STILL LOVES CHIMAIRA

Friday, November 6th, 2009 at 4:30pm by

Last night Vince and I hit up the Trivium/Chimaira/Whitechapel/Dirge Within show at Irving Plaza here in NYC. I will never ever get sick of watching Chimaira live. They have a forty-five minute set on this tour, and they really make the most of it by basically segueing directly from one song to the next with a minimum of on-stage banter, presumably in order to allow a maximum of brutality. To top it off, the set-list was pretty much perfect – they played at least one or two songs from each of their albums (This Present Darkness excluded), and not always they song(s) you’d expect, either. Definitely go check ‘em out!

Here they are doing “Severed” at the Download Festival in 2007. They played this song last night and the pit just went insane – I think this has to be the heaviest track on Pass Out of Existence, no?

A GOOD EXCUSE TO POST MORE CHIMAIRA LIVE FOOTAGE

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009 at 3:00pm by

I am SO PISSED that I missed Chimaira’s most recent tour (with Hatebreed), because a) Chimaira slay live and b) I’m fucking dying to hear some more material from The Infection in a live setting – when I saw the band on this spring’s Music as a Weapon tour, the album had literally just come out that day and the band were, consequently, only playing two new songs.

So. Rhythm guitarist Matt DeVries had to pull a Mark Morton and leave the tour early so he could get home for the birth of his new child, Austin (Mazel tov, Matt!); filling in for him is Daath co-guitarist/all around cool dude Emil Werstler. I am using this little fact as an excuse to post this video I saw on Blabbermouth of the Wersterful Chimaira performing “The Venom Inside.” Also, to point out that bassist Jim LaMarca seems to have shed his signature locks. That leaves DeVries as the only dude in Chimaira capable of windmilling. Just sayin’.

Chimaira continue to decimate Europe alongside Unearth, Throwdown, and our friends in Daath through October 12; then, at the end of the month, they hit the States again with Trivium, Whitechapel and Dirge Within. Get dates here.
