WANNA SEE A DRUM HIT IN SUPER-DUPER-UPER SLO-MO?

Thursday, July 7th, 2011 at 2:40pm by

When Axl and I were kids we would get together with our friends for WWF slumber parties in which the main event was Wrestlemania or Summer Slam on Pay-Per-View, and damn, do you remember how EXPENSIVE those things seemed when you had to pool together months’ worth of allowance for just one broadcast?? Highway robbery. Several pillow fights in which we dressed up as our favorite wrestlers (no homo) and a few bowls of popcorn later we’d always tape the event as we watched it, and in the ensuing weeks one of our favorite things to do was re-watch body slams, pile drivers and various wrestlers’ signature moves using the groundbreaking Slo-Mo technology on our brand new VCR. Watching those brutal combos in choppy frame-by-frame slow motion provided endless hours of entertaintment!

Slo-Mo has sure come a long way since then; HD broadcasts of sports events regularly show crystal clear slow motion replays, and now a company called Ultraslo has a “high-speed” / slo-mo camera that can shoot at a whopping 3,000 frames for second. To demo their new product, Ultraslo put together a video of a snare hit in ultra-slo-mo (3,000 fps) and another of a cymbal hit at almost-ultra-slo-mo (1,000 fps) and, uh… WOW. That’s all I can muster. The snare hit is cool and all, but the cymbal hit might be more impressive despite being shot at slower rate.

Be sure to thankĀ Metal Injection for digging these clips up.

THE FINAL WORD ON METAL DRUMMING

Friday, December 3rd, 2010 at 3:30pm by

For some reason, internet metal nerds love to talk about drummers, even if they themselves do not play drums. Whether it’s “Who has the fastest double bass/blastbeats?”, “Should I use one bass drum or two?” or “What does Pete Sandoval’s drum throne smell like?”, there are few things more tiresome than the topic of metal drumming. What that in mind, in this post I will put the discussion of this topic to rest forever by conclusively saying all that there is to say about metal drumming. After this post has been published, anyone who still debates these points is as foolish, ignorant and stubborn as people who believe the Earth is flat or that God exists. So if you have anything to say, say it now, because this is it — this is your chance to become part of the moment in which we closed the door on dorky, redundant debates about metal drumming.

This is THE FINAL WORD on metal drumming!!!!

“3 THINGS I HATE ABOUT DEATH METAL DRUMMING”

Friday, August 6th, 2010 at 2:00pm by

This guy really hates poser death metal drummers. Really hates ‘em! Like an Axl Rosenberg level of passionate hate. And as much as I wanna smack the guy for being an elitist prick who’s obviously got many years of practice under his belt and is flaunting it, at least he’s got the technique to back up all that talk. He’s got a point.

EVER PLAYED DRUMS? EVER PLAYED THE KEYBOARD? EVER PLAYED DRUMS ON THE KEYBOARD????

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010 at 3:00pm by

I know what you’re thinking… that playing drums on the keyboard is elementary. And you’d be right in that playing a simple 4/4 beat of drum samples is pretty easy on a keyboard. But once you watch this video by Chimp Spanner your perception of playing beats on the blacks and whites will be forever changed… this guy’s got some kind of insane, special skill. The dexterity it must take to nail some of those drum fills is really, really fucking impressive. How much do you think he had to practice this piece before nailing it all in one take?

THE DRUMS ARE COOL

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 2:33pm by

Sure, we all know that it’s totally shweet to play the drums really fast, but my man Bernard “Pretty” Purdie clearly proves that groove need not rush itself:

After the jump, Purdie hocks a loogi and ‘splains’ a thing or two more, all whilst wearing a pink polo shirt.

Metal.
