DUFF MCKAGAN REALLY IS GOING TO OPEN FOR GUNS N’ ROSES

Tuesday, December 13th, 2011 at 12:40pm by

In October, Axl Rose told That Metal Show that Duff McKagan’s Loaded featuring Duff McKagan was going to open some shows on GN’R current North American headlining tour. But then we didn’t hear anything else about it for over a month, so I think most people either assumed it wasn’t happening, or forgot about it all together.

But now it’s actually happening, and is happening this week, no less, in Seattle and Vancouver.

DUFF MCKAGAN IS GONNA OPEN FOR AXL ROSE

Monday, October 31st, 2011 at 12:00pm by

In 2006, with a little help from Sebastian Bach, Eddie Trunk actually got Axl Rose to come on his radio show for, like, hours, which is obviously a pretty major coup, given that Rose usually only grants incomprehensible e-mail interviews. And the chat was incredibly entertaining, even if Trunk didn’t ask any of the burning questions Rose refuses to answer (e.g., “So, like, what the fuck, dude?” ), ’cause he did get Rose to lighten up and tell some great stories about David Lee Roth, Jimmy Iovine, and the classic days of Guns N’ Roses. (That’s just one part of the interview above; the rest is easy to find on YouTube.)

And I guess Rose was happy with the way things went, too, ’cause over the weekend he apparently granted Trunk another really long interview, this time for Trunk’s television program, That Metal Show. And while the full episode hasn’t been released yet, Trunk did reveal over Twitter that Rose said that Duff McKagan’s Loaded featuring Duff McKagan will be opening some future GN’R shows. (Actually, Trunk just said “Loaded will open shows,” but presumably he meant GN’R shows. Either that, or he has no sense of how context works.)

WATCH THE REVOLVER GOLDEN GODS AWARDS “PEOPLE WHO DIED” MONTAGE

Friday, May 13th, 2011 at 11:30am by

The Revolver Golden Gods Awards will air on VH1 later this month (or something… I know we got a press release but I was too lazy to read it), and it will be interesting to see that, because I was there, but I didn’t actually see very much of the show. I saw the schmuck from Asking Alexandria drop his mic two seconds into “Youth Gone Wild,” and I saw some of Avenged Sevenfold’s performances with Duff McKagan and Vinnie Paul, and I saw enough of Chris Jericho performing “For Whom the Bell Tolls” to consider throwing myself over the balcony and ending the awards in spectacular fashion (sometimes, sacrifices must be made for the greater good). But by and large I was too busy snorting coke in the bathroom with a girl who fucking swore to me that it wasn’t a herpes sore that lying bitch! to be bothered.

So one thing I had absolutely no idea even transpired was the below montage paying tribute to the five guys who died in the past year that are relevant to the readers of Revolver, which is to say, not Phil Vane or Frankie Sparcello.

But I shouldn’t be a jerk about it, it’s really a very touching video.

NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: STILL RIDING THAT LIGHTNING

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 at 2:00pm by

Neilstein Soundscam

The Foo Fighters are #1 for the 2nd week in a row; I have yet to hear Wasting Light but everything Dave Grohl puts out is quality and the two songs I’ve heard so far are both slam dunks. Conversely, Hollywood Undead are #2 for the second week in a row; can’t win ‘em all, I guess, but at least they’re not #1.

Elsewhere Winds of Plague, Periphery and Loaded had solid debuts, while pretty much any band that was on Revolver’s Golden Gods Awards show experienced a nice little sales bump. Numbers after the fold.

DID YOU KNOW THAT DUFF MCKAGAN IS IN DUFF MCKAGAN’S LOADED?

Friday, April 22nd, 2011 at 3:40pm by

So I was hanging out on the smoking balcony at the Revolver Golden Gods on Wednesday night when I spotted a few of the below promotional cards scattered on a nearby table.

DUFF MCKAGAN PEELS OFF HIS WIFE’S CLOTHES “DEAD SKIN”

Friday, April 1st, 2011 at 12:00pm by

Crave Online has premiered Duff McKagan’s Loaded’s new video, “Dead Skin,” and in this case, “dead skin” seems to be a clever metaphor for “clothing.” Because the best parts of this video have Mrs. Duff, the almost unfairly beautiful former model/current designer Susan Holmes, stripping away various articles of clothing. Not that I’m complaining  – the rest of the video is pretty boring.

On a less lecherous note, it’s nice to see drummer Isaac Carpenter (formerly of Loudermilk) getting so many close-ups. Humorously enough, Loudermilk started out as a Guns N’ Roses cover band, .22s N’ Tulips, and now Carpenter actually plays in McKagan’s band. Guy’s an awesome drummer, so he deserves any success that comes his way.

DUFF MCKAGAN TO AUTO-TUNE: “GET FUCKED”

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011 at 1:00pm by

I remember a time when if a singer couldn’t sing, they either a) did not get to have a career, or b) fronted a really dirty-sounding band so that it didn’t matter that they sounded kinda, uh, off. I mean, Tom Araya was never exactly Ronnie James Dio, and no one gave a shit. It’s rock n’ roll, man! It’s not s’posed to sound perfect!

This tradition of “Fuck it if the singer doesn’t sound amazing” barely seems to exist anymore. And for that reason alone, I have to tip my hat to Duff McKagan. His band Loaded have a new album, The Taking, coming out in the spring, and they’ve released a bunch of new songs from that album. None of them are great songs by any stretch of the imagination, but I kind of admire the fact that McKagan’s vocals more or less sound like crap. I mean, they’re not modern-day Dave Mustaine bad, but they’re still really bad. He could have auto-tuned the fuck out’ve ‘em, but, no, the guy comes from a punk rock tradition, and clearly just does not give a shit about trying to convince the world that he’s any better than he is.

Check out some new tracks from The Taking after the jump to get a sense of what I mean…

I AM GOING TO WATCH THIS SHOW

Friday, October 15th, 2010 at 10:30am by

So E! is apparently doing a new reality show, called Married to Rock, which, in case the title doesn’t make it obvious, is about the wives of some famous rock stars. Here’s a rundown of the women who are going to be on this show (some barely safe for work pics after the jump… you’ve been warned, you horn dogs):

THE NY TIMES IS TOO GOOD FOR ANYONE NAMED “DUFF”

Tuesday, June 2nd, 2009 at 4:00pm by

michael-mckagan

I was a little taken aback when I was this editorial in the New York Times this morning, written by former Guns N’ Roses/current Velvet Revolver bassist/current Loaded front man, Duff McKagan. Not so much because I was surprised to see that Duff is literate – he has a column in Playboy – but because the byline features his birth name, Michael McKagan.

Maybe it’s wrong of me to assume that the Times was being snotty – perhaps it was his idea to use his real name in the Paper of Record – but the whole thing is just kind of a head-scratcher.

No word yet on whether or not Axl Rose will now start writing for the Washington Post under the name “Bill Bailey.”

P.S. I interviewed Duff back in April. The MetalSucks Mansion Monkeys have been dragging their feet getting that shit transcribed, but at some point, you’ll get to read it.

DUFF MCKAGAN ENJOYS BINGO, STEALING MONEY FROM OLD MEN

Friday, March 27th, 2009 at 2:00pm by

I really like this video for “Flatline,” a new song by Duff McKagan’s Loaded. Sure, it was clearly done on the cheap, but it has a good sense of fun, and the song is a catchy lil’ hard rock ditty, which is more than I can say for the Marilyn Manson songs. Plus, it has cute girls and a little bit of cleavage, so it can’t be all bad.

Sick, the new album by Duff McKagan’s Loaded, will be out April 7 on Century.
