YO DAWG I HEARD YOU LIKE FACEBOOK AND BANDCAMP…

Thursday, October 13th, 2011 at 3:00pm by

… so we put a Bandcamp on your Facebook, so you can Bandcamp while you Facebook!

About fucking time. Perhaps inspired by the recent Spotify/Facebook integration and the half-a-dozen or so Facebook apps for bands, Bandcamp has finally released a Facebook Bandcamp app that allows bands to add a Bandcamp tab with embeds from their Bandcamp page directly into their Facebook profile.

Bandcamp is the best platform currently available to bands for streaming and selling digital music and Facebook is the best social networking tool, so a union of the two makes perfect sense. More and more bands that send us material for review are including Bandcamp links, and I hope even more start to hop on the Bandcamp bandwagon now that Facebook integration is possible. Bandcamp is where it’s at. My mind is blown every time a band sends us a MySpace link.

YO DAWG I HEARD U LIKE FACEBOOK AND SPOTIFY…

… so we put a Spotify on your Facebook, so you can Spotify while you Facebook!

If you’ve logged onto Facebook over the past couple of days you’ve no doubt noticed the LOL-inducing new sidebar feed, so poignantly repped by our good friend Xzibit. You’ve also probably noticed that Facebook now allows Spotify users to directly integrate a music feed of what they’re listening to in real time into their status updates, similar to the way Last.fm users can automatically post their live playlists to Twitter (and FB too if I’m not mistaken). It all happens automatically once you link your FB and Spotify accounts; you don’t have to manually enter each song you’re listening to. The Facebook/Spotify integration goes one step further, too, by allowing Spotify members to click “play” and listen to the same songs as their friends from within their Facebook feeds:

facebook and spotify

Even if you’re anti-Spotify, it’s incredibly hard to deny how valuable this integration will be for bands and their record labels. Let’s break it down:

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: HAVE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ALTERED THE METAL SCENE FOR THE WORSE?

Welcome to “Question of the Week,” a (sometimes) weekly debate amongst the MetalSucks staff regarding a recent hot button issue.

Inspired this week by Vince’s response to Earache head honcho Digby Pearson’s assertion that the effects that social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook have been detrimental to metal, we decided to ask the rest of our writers:

HAVE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ALTERED THE METAL SCENE FOR THE WORSE?

The MS staff’s answers after the jump.

HAVE SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES ALTERED THE METAL SCENE FOR THE WORST?

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010 at 1:20pm by

likeIn the latest entry on Ask Earache – the blog on which Earache head honcho Digby Pearson opens himself up to reader questions and promises “straight answers… without the bullshit” and defends re-thrash as a forward-pushing genre – Dig takes a stab at quantifying the effects that social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook have had on the metal scene. His argument is that the social networks have changed what it means to be a fan from going to the show and hanging around for all the bands to simply pressing the “like” button, and as a result the metal scene is suffering. As with the past Ask Earache blog posts I’ve read, Dig’s premise is sound but his logic leads to a false conclusion. Check it out as Professor Neilstein dissects his argument one point at a time.

MY MOM’S ON FACEBOOK

Monday, March 29th, 2010 at 1:30pm by

True story: shortly after my mom joined Facebook she actually posted on my wall telling me to clean my room. My mom… on Facebook… telling me to clean my room. Oy vey.

One Sunday evening I was lounging around the Mansion bored and posted a Facebook status update to the tune of “I’m bored. What do you people do on Sunday nights?” In hindsight it was a pretty pointless post. Responses ranged from “Watch football” to “Watch football,” and since I don’t have a TV in the Vince Division I was no better off than when I’d started. My mom, ever the opportunist, took advantage of the opening by posting on my wall to say that I should come over to her apartment and clean out the one closet of stuff I still keep at her place (mostly baseball cards… what the fuck else am I supposed to do with them?). Since her post was naturally a few hours after the fact it dangled there like a fart in a shower for all to see. It was humiliating! Why at this age I should even care at all is a mystery to me, but I felt like I was in high school all over again. At the very least it provided for some LOLs later on. Needless to say, after that I had to have a talk about proper Facebook behavior with Mama Neilstein.

MS reader Anna sent us a video by a group called Blood of TigerCat that completely understand my plight. The song is fittingly called “My Mom’s on Facebook.” I’ll let them take it from here…

METALSUCKS GETS DOWN WITH THE WEBERNETS

Friday, June 19th, 2009 at 2:00pm by

In case ya’ll don’t know, we’re down with all the cool kids. Join us on MySpace, Facebook and Twitter if you haven’t already. OK, maybe not MySpace.

The killer metal news site SMNnews.com has just re-launched with a brand new design and interface; we highly recommend you use SMN as your metal news source rather than that other site.

Also be sure to check out the intrepid industry reporting the lads at MetalInsider.net are doing — smart, timely and sadonic, just the way we like it.

That is all. You may now return to your regular daily business.
