cooking contaminated

Eli Shaika is back with more Cooking Contaminated freshness, this time with Javelina guitarist/vocalist “Chubbs.” With a name like that you’d expect only the best in the kitchen, and you’d be correct; Chubbs is a self-proclaimed chili expert, having both judged and won several chili cook-offs. Chubbs’ own chili recipe is an all-pork affair… bacon, pork tenderloin, ground pork, more bacon, more bacon, and more bacon. Couple that with Eli’s cornbread and you’ve got another winning meal. Bon Appetit.

Pretty big week here at the MetalSucks Mansion. We laughed, we cried, we fired someone, we rocked out with our cocks out. Here’s a rundown of the highlights:

Alright. I’m going to see Where the Wild Things Are now. I’m fairly certain that it is going to make me weep like Gary Suarez. See ya Monday.

JAVELINA THIN THE HERD ON BEASTS AMONG SHEEP

javelina - beasts among sheep

If the only thing I got from Beasts Among Sheep was a newfound respect for Javelina’s biggest influence, the defunct sludge-punk troupe Buzzov*en, that would be enough for major props-giving. But hot damn, does this Philly band have a lot of other stuff going for them. Least of which is that they’re easy to believe. There’s no polish to Beasts Among Sheep, no foundation for artifice, just eight tracks of mud-caked riffs and cantankerous dispositions. Producer Sanford Parker gives the album that first-take raw vibe that this kind of light-on-subtlety metal requires.

I saw this band live a couple of months ago in Brooklyn, and besides having easily the fiercest beards of the night they also had the fiercest riffs. Take a listen to the new track “Towers of Silence” below or download it for FREE. You can order the record on vinyl at Brutal Panda or on CD at Translation Loss.

I LIKE HOWL AND SO SHOULD YOU

howlers

Straight out of the heavy music mecca that is Providence, Rhode Island, Howl kick so much ass that it’s not really funny but actually rather serious on account of the aforementioned painful ass kickings. Relapse recently released the band’s self-titled three-song EP, which is streaming at Howl’s MySpace and available to purchase here They’re heavy, unpretentious, and not easily pigeonholed into any one of the bandied about subgenres in this grand thing we call metal. I’ll leave it to the opinionated chicken-chokers that make it their lives’ work to define metal in our comments section, but I’d say if the adjective “sludgy” sounds appealing then you’re going to want to get in on the ground floor with Howl before they’re headlining bigger venues.
