Welcome to “Question of the Week,” a (not really at all) weekly debate amongst the MetalSucks staff regarding a recent hot button issue.

Inspired by the ongoing disaster that is Lou Reed & Metallica’s Lulu, this week we asked our writers:

BESIDES METALLICA AND LOU REED, WHAT IS THE WORST COLLABORATION BETWEEN A METAL BAND/ARTIST AND A NON-METAL BAND/ARTIST? AND WHAT IS THE WORST ONE YOU COULD POSSIBLY IMAGINE IN YOUR WILDEST NIGHTMARES?

The MS staff’s answers after the jump!

CRACK HITLER’S TOP FIVE METAL VOCALISTS (WHO WERE NEVER IN METAL BANDS)

I’m a firm believer in the idea that being metal and being in a metal band are not mutually exclusive. Much like how watching your uncle dressed as santa claus get drunk and fight your dad at family christmas is metal despite technically being the manifestation of years of pent-up tension between two dullard paper pushers, the following vocalists managed to be metal without the aid of a single inverted crucifix or a pig squeal. JOHNNY CASH IS METAL

Thursday, February 26th, 2009 at 1:15pm by

Today would have been Johnny Cash’s 77th birthday. In his honor, here’s his video for “Hurt” – a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song from the producer of Reign in Blood.

Is this version superior to Trent Reznor’s original? Cash’s age (and personal history) certainly lends the lyrics extra poignancy; he’s not a young man belly aching, but an old man looking back at the mess of his life.

WHILE WE’RE POSTING COVERS OF SOUNDGARDEN’S “RUSTY CAGE”, CHECK OUT JOHNNY CASH’S (+BONUS JC/NIN COVER VIDEO)

Johnny Cash fingerMaybe it’s because the Soil version Vince just posted is so damn awful, maybe ’cause the iconic Johnny Cash would probably never appear on this website otherwise — in any case, here’s the dark cowboy’s cover version of Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage”…and it’s pretty awesome!

JOHNNY CASH – “Rusty Cage”

Also, if you weren’t depressed enough that it’s Monday, here’s the weepy Mark Romanek-directed video of the Johnny Cash cover version of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt”. Ironically Mr. Cash’s last video ever; very touching and fitting as his final performance.
