A NEW KYLESA ALBUM = MORE ARGUING

Thursday, August 12th, 2010 at 1:20pm by

There’s a concept that people seem to have a hard time wrapping their heads around, and that concept is this: there are many different writers here at MetalSucks, and each of those writers is a different person and, as such, has his or her own opinion on various topics, and, consequently, does not always agree with his or co-workers’ stance on any given issue.

Case in point: Kylesa. Vince doesn’t get what the big deal is, Sammy and Bob love ‘em to pieces, and I fall somewhere in between — I think they rock really, really hard, but I don’t think they’re the Second Coming or anything.

And we’ll all get a chance to argue lots and lots about them real soon — the band has announced an October 26 release date for their latest offering, Spiral Shadow. In fact, we can all start arguing right now: Invisible Oranges has posted footage of the band playing a new song on their current European tour. Watch it below.

I’ll go first: I think this song sounds potentially really, really awesome. Cosmo Lee says the riff reminds him of Nirvana; I know this is gonna sound weird, but it sounds to me like a way, way, way less irritating variation of Blink 182′s “What’s My Age Again?” Not that it matters… this is far superior to that. Some tribal drums, druggier speeds, and not-nasally vocals go a long way towards gaining some goodwill from me, y’know?

So… how do you feel about it?

IN WHICH WE CUT SOME DUDE’S DICK OFF

Friday, June 4th, 2010 at 5:00pm by

But he, like, totally had it coming. He was the singer for some band called Beneath the Sky.

I’m kidding. I don’t endorse violence against untalented people. Just front row games of Uno.

ANYWAY, here’s some other shit we happened this week:

Next week we get to debut that video we were supposed to debut this week, and we have another stream, and some other stuff I’m probably forgetting. ‘Til then, enjoy your weekend!

ON KYLESA

Friday, June 4th, 2010 at 1:00pm by

kylesa

My post about Kylesa the other day seemed to get a lot of folks riled up. Which is great, because this is MetalSucks and we love getting folks riled up!

But I realize that I made a mistake by including the word “hipster” in the headline, because at least half the commenters who defended Kylesa latched onto that word and used it to characterize my dislike of the band. While it so happens that a lot of folks who don’t listen to much metal do seem to like Kylesa (and that some people might call these folks “hipsters”), that’s not a reason for me not to like the band. I don’t like them because of the reasons I enumerated in the 5+ paragraphs that made up the body of the article. “Hipster” or non-hipster… I couldn’t give a fuck who Kylesa’s fans are. I don’t like ‘em ’cause I don’t like ‘em, and I spent a good amount of time formulating an argument based on the actual music. So if you disagree with me and you love Kylesa, great for you and please feel free to tell the world why, but kindly pay attention to the article that I wrote and the points therein instead of latching onto one word which, admittedly, probably isn’t even accurate.

That said — and I made a point to close the other article this way, which I’ll do again right here — I did see some artistic growth between Kylesa’s prior album and the most recent one, and I’ll still give the new one a shot when it comes out. But based on what I’ve seen and heard of this band up until now I have not enjoyed their music. And that’s that.

KYLESA GET READY TO BEGUILE HIPSTERS WITH MEDIOCRE METAL ONCE AGAIN

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010 at 11:30am by

kylesa

I’ve never been able to get into Kylesa. For a period there in 2008 and 2009 they were a support act on every tour ever so I got a number of opportunities to see them live, each time hoping that I’d finally see what everyone else sees in this band and suddenly “get it”… but alas, it never happened. My charges against Kylesa are such:

  1. With two drummers in the band, I’d hope for something either insanely ridiculous or insanely awesome (or both); the possibilities are limitless. Instead, Kylesa’s two drummers for the most part just double each other or, occasionally, one “fills in the cracks” left by the other’s backbeat. Bo-ring. It just comes off as a cheap gimmick — “hey, that band has TWO drummers up there, WOW!” Phooey. There is so much unchartered territory in two-drummers-ville and this band explores none of it.
  2. Kylesa don’t bring very much (or anything) to the table that hasn’t already been done before. By Mastodon. Who do it (much) better. Big stoner taco riffs that have been done over and over and over and over by bands for the past decade? Dalliances with minor time signature shifts? Occasional adventures into psych rock territory? Monotonously shouted half-scream/half-sing vocals? Check, check, check and check.

What’s worse is that beardo Williamsburg hipsters eat this shit up. Kylesa did a U.S. tour with The Ocean (and other awesome bands) a couple of Summers ago that stopped at the old Knitting Factory in Manhattan, and the moment Kylesa finished playing their completely mediocre and average brand of stoner prog the room cleared out. Before the fucking Ocean! Who absolutely destroyed it that night, by the way. I guess the masses would rather hear average joe stoner riffs they’ve already heard a bazillion times before (from other bands) than music that actually takes chances and challenges their intellect. Go figure.

ANYWAY, Kylesa have a new album coming out. My thoughts on this news, after the jump.

EXCLUSIVE TOUR BLOG FROM BISON B.C.’S DAN AND (PART II)

falltour01

We loved the last tour blog that Bison B.C.’s Dan And did for us so much, we’re only all-too-happy to present another! Below, please enjoy part 2; you can read part 1 here.

Sep 28 ’09 (Albuquerque NM @ Launch Pad)

The first thing that struck me about this venue was the framed posters that line the walls… Melvins, High on Fire, Fu Manchu… some killer bands have been through here over the years. I was also struck by how nice and clean Albuquerque seemed. I would later find out that the town is ranked in the top five for violent crimes in the US. Okay then, never mind.

Played with a rad band called Roñoso. Weirdest guitar tone ever but it totally worked in their crust-saw sound. Kylesa sounds fucking huge tonight. Their (hilarious) sound guy Dave is working the system like it owes him money… and it probably does.

We loved the last tour blog that Bison B.C.’s Dan And did for us so much, we’re only all-too-happy to present another! Below, please enjoy part 1; check back tomorrow for part 2!

Sep 11 ’09 (Vancouver BC @ Commodore)

I always love kicking off a tour with a show in Vancouver. It’s great to have one last chance to get completely loser pissed with our friends before we hit the road for however long. This time we were fortunate enough to finally share the stage with local good ‘ol boys The Golers and old pals 3 Inches of Blood. The Golers have been around forever and everyone should fucking hear them. They’re basically Vancouver’s Venomous Concept: relentless, break-neck speed pummeling. Is grind-punk a genre?

Show was fucking fun as all hell. It was 3 Inches record release show for Here Waits Thy Doom (which may or may not feature all of us doing backups on the song “Preacher’s Daughter”) and the place was packed! The cap of the Commodore is somewhere between 950 and 1000 and apparently it was like 15 tickets away from being sold out. Jesse from local grinders Zuckuss pointed out how fucking crazy it is that three local bands brought that many metal heads out of the woodwork. The night was bitter sweet though because not only was our good friend Ian unable to be there because of surgery but that night would also be my last chance to ever set foot in local punk/metal institution the Cobalt. I can’t even describe how awesome that bar and the staff are. The thought that it’s getting shut down by the fucking slum lords that own the building so they can cash in on Olympic fever makes me wanna tear someone’s head off. I’m consoled by the fact that I know bar legend/honcho Wendy 13 will soon enough have a new venue I can crawl out of at 5am reeking of Jager bombs. COBALT FOREVER!

ANCESTORS’ OF SOUND MIND: DOOM FOR PROG FANS… BY WAY OF PINK FLOYD

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009 at 2:30pm by

ofsoundmind

Los Angeles psychedelic-doom drivers Ancestors are already back with another new album after last year’s acclaimed two track debut Neptune With Fire, and this time around they’re  arguably even more ambitious. On the eight track Of Sound Mind, the band expands their scope and continues their doom-laden trip down nostalgia lane, with plenty of prog rock inspirations. And lots of guitars.

SATURDAY VIDEO TO GUZZLE CHARDONNAY TO: ST. VITUS – “FEAR”

Saturday, October 17th, 2009 at 6:33pm by

If you’re an asshole like me, then you probably missed New York’s only chance to catch the way-too-minimal St. Vitus reunion tour last night (with baddass Bay Area bandits Saviours opening). But if you’re anything like me, you surely had somewhere much better to be.

Truth is, I never got into St. Vitus in too big a way, but after seeing legendary guitarist Wino absolutely destroy a Valentine’s Day show with his now-defunct excellent trio The Hidden Hand some years ago in the East Village (with up-n-comers Kylesa opening, who nobody had heard of at the time), I’m ready to join forces with and follow the man into battle no matter what the project.

Okay, so Wino’s actually not playing on this track and admittedly this tune is pretty silly, but it’s hard to argue that it’s not a goddamn stonyyyyy song………especially when the weird guitar solo comes in around the 2:10 mark, accompanied by some trippy jump cuts, brah!

And thus, I feel compelled to bestow upon this soon-to-be legendary YouTube video from 1992 all seven possible MS horns — this is clearly gonna change the face of YouTube.

metal hornsmetal hornsmetal hornsmetal hornsmetal hornsmetal hornsmetal horns

(7 out of 7 horns — top honors for YouTube videos)

Please remember, not only does my post reflect the opinions of every writer here at MetalSucks but each and every one of you readers as well……so no need to disagree.

For the scant handful of remaining St. Vitus reunion dates (in Worcester tonight with The Misfits and Type O Negative (whoa), then Baltimore, LA, and San muthafuckin Fran) and/or to listen to some of their early seminal recordings, check em out on MySpace.

After the jump, a shitty-quality video of Wino’s first ever performance with the band in 1986 at the Palm Springs Community Center, some killer Hidden Hand stuff, and a couple interviews with the man himself.

WUT WUT!!

THE PROFOUND LORE OF SALOME

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 at 1:30pm by

salome_promo_250I haven’t sung the praises of Salome in awhile, so here goes: this band crushes. Everyone I know who has seen them live has just been floored with them. Guitarist Rob Moore and drummer Aaron Deal (read my interview with Mr. Deal here) play as though they’re actively attempting to use soundwaves as a weapon, and vocalist Kat… well, she goes to some other place. Like, she temporarily becomes psychotic or something. (Actually, maybe she’s always psychotic. I’ve never actually met her, but her art is pretty dark. I once considered buying a piece because I think it’s so cool, but I was afraid if women saw it on my wall, I’d never get laid again. Of course, right now I’m having trouble finding the link to the page where you can buy her art, but just take my word for it. It’s bleak.)

Now Salome have signed a deal to release their next full-length – actually, I think it’s their first full-length – through Profound Lore. That makes them label mates with Agalloch, The Gates of Slumber, Cobalt, Alceste, and some other awesome bands. In other words: it seems like a good fit.

The band is still writing said full-length, but they have a split with Thou coming out sometime soon (more details as I get them!), and I strongly encourage you to check out their EP in the meantime – or, even better, go see them live. As we reported before, they’ll hit the road in September on a tour with the equally fantastic Hull and Batillus, and will even be playing the MetalSucks co-sponsored Planet Caravan fest in North Carolina alongside Clutch, Kylesa, Burst, Wino, and a whole bunch of other great groups. Really. Go see them. It is truly a fucking experience.

Complete tour dates after the jump. If you don’t know Salome, visit them on MySpace ASAP.

I MISUNDERESTIMATED TOMBS

Monday, August 10th, 2009 at 4:00pm by

The first time I heard Tombs‘ Relapse Records debut Winterhours was on the New York subway with iPod earbuds, which are clearly not the ideal conditions for developing an accurate initial impression of a band. I wasn’t impressed and turned it off after a few songs, likely in favor of something more familiar such as The Jonas Brothers. Recently though, I’ve given the record some undivided attention at home, where the sound is hardly state-of-the-art but at least it isn’t subject to train noises and obnoxious interruptions by my fellow passengers. Much to my surprise and delight, I fucking love Winterhours.

MORE BANDS HOP ONTO THE PLANET CARAVAN

Monday, August 3rd, 2009 at 3:00pm by

planet caravanA couple of weeks back we reported on the sudden glut of U.S. metal festivals this year, the latest of which is the MetalSucks-sponsored Planet Caravan 2-day metal festival being held in Asheville, NC this September. Quick refresher: Clutch, Pentagram, Kylesa, Burst (first and last U.S. tour ever!), Wino and many others. Today we’re thrilled to announce that the already strong bill has gotten that much stronger with a slew of heavyweight bands added: Tombs, The Gates of Slumber, Zoroaster, Bison B.C., Sourvein, doom kings/queen Salome, and friends of MetalSucks Hull and Battilus, the latter 3 of which will be touring the U.S. together around that time. All of the newly added acts will perform on the also-newly added second stage, right next door to the Orange Peel mainstage at Mo Daddy’s.

If you live anywhere close to North Carolina, how can you even consider not going to this event? It’s going to be a fucking rager. Tickets are on sale here or at the Orange Peel box office.

PLANET CARAVAN METAL FESTIVAL TO STORM THE SOUTHEAST

Thursday, July 16th, 2009 at 10:00am by

Planet Caravan festival

At the beginning of the year I wrote a piece highlighting the sudden abundance of awesome metal festivals in the U.S.. Though our friends across the pond still retain an advantage in metal festivals in both number and size, 2009 saw a whole host of upstarts in the U.S.: Scion Rock Fest, L.A. Murderfest (in its 5th year), California MetalFest, Texas Metal Up Your Ass, Dudefest and of course long-established destinations such as Maryland Deathfest, New England Metal and Hardcore Festival and Dirtfest. SXSW and CMJ both made surprisingly strong showings for metal this year, too.

The party keeps on rolling into the fall with another brand new festival, Planet Caravan, to take place September 18th and 19th at the Orange Peel in Asheville, North Carolina. The lineup is headlined by Clutch and Pentagram, with Orange Goblin, Kylesa, Burst (!), Yob, Wino, Astra, and Revolution Mother rounding out the bill. I haven’t heard of Taddy Porter, Orchid, or Pick Up the Snake, but even if all 3 bands are terrible (highly unlikely) that’s still a fucking killer lineup!

MetalSucks is co-sponsoring the event so we’ll have more news as it’s available. Check out the press release and festival details after the jump.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH KYLESA’S LAURA PLEASANTS AND ERIC HERNANDEZ

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 at 1:00pm by

kylesa1

Kylesa’s not new to the millennial metal underground, but one would not be surprised if their fanbase grows exponentially in the wake of their fucking fantastic new album, Static Tensions. Tighter and more coherent than its predecessors, it shows the band flexing a muscle they’d been alluding to throughout their career. This is not to dismiss their previous successes; the band have been an intense and wonderful blend of sludge, crust punk, doom, trad metal, and otherwise from the beginning.

A big part of the band’s artistic success is Laura Pleasants, the group’s acid-throated vocalist/guitarist. Her sinewy leads provide a metal ying to guitarist/vocalist Philip Cope’s punk rock yang, a thorough stirring of the band’s hybrid stew. During a recent show on Mastodon’s Crack the Skye tour (where, if they didn’t blow the headliners off the stage, they certainly equalled them), she and drummer Eric Hernandez (who also deserves credit for keeping Kylesa’s two drummers from devolving into a masturbatory percussion fiasco) discussed the composition of Static Tensions, Kylesa’s place in the metal world, their penchant for playing cross-genre shows, and why Laura being a woman in metal isn’t really as big a deal as it may seem.

BLOGRONAUT: MASTODON TOUR RECAP (IN PHOTO FORM!)

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 at 2:39pm by

Blogronaut

Hey all, its been a while since I’ve updated this blog. We’ve been super busy over the past few months, most recently with the tour we just finished with Mastodon and Kylesa. This was without a doubt one of the most awesome tours we have ever been a part of. I’d like to publicly thank everyone in Mastodon and their crew for going out of their way to be helpful and make us feel welcome. It’s nice to see that all the success hasn’t jaded you guys. It was also a pleasure to meet and bro down with Kylesa for five weeks. I hope we can all do this again some time.

Here are some highlights:

SOUTHERN DISCOMFORT, VOL. 2: A BOOZE-FUELED FRENZY THRU FOUR DAZE OF SCHLOCK N SHLOLL AT SXSW 2009

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 at 1:32pm by

sxsw2009After the antics of the first day of the festival, I felt more than ready to get into day two with a healthy dose of music from the beginning. Unfortunately, that was not to be so for me, as at the time I thought I would be continuing on after SXSW into further ridonkulousness, all the way to a family vacation during Spring Break in Mexico….and today was the day that my renewed passport was meant to be FedExed to the flophouse where Vince and I were crashing.

When I had returned to said flophouse the night prior and to my surprise found an open couch in the living room right by the front door (where I was told FedEx homeboy would appear bright and early), I figured it prolly made the most sense to sleep right there on the ground floor as opposed to the stank upstairs sweat lodge where I would be sure to miss any sounds of door knocking.

Sadly, no FedEx arrived in the morning as promised — I was actually awoken by a phone call from Vince around noon wondering where the hell I had ended up last night. After a couple more hours my passport finally arrived, at which point I had to wait at least another hour for a cab to take me down to the action.

HOLY SHIT.

SXSW METAL REPORT: DAY 2

Friday, March 20th, 2009 at 12:30pm by

After yesterday morning’s scare, thankfully Kip turned up. On the couch downstairs at the flophouse we’re crashing at. Phew!

It was another fine day in Texas; 80 degrees, sunny, lots of metal. First up was Full Metal Texas, at which I saw Black Math Horsemen, Kylesa, Skeletonwitch and Fact. The End Records / MetalSucks showcase followed, at which Junius, Hull, These are They, Goes Cube, Tub Ring and Early Man rocked the confines of a tightly packed room that looked like an old European castle. My quick summary after the jump.

METALSUCKS-SPONSORED HAUNTED TOUR GETS SOME NEW BANDS

Friday, March 6th, 2009 at 12:00pm by

Lots and lots of you have e-mailed us this week to ask about the fact that Intronaut and Kylesa have both dropped off The Haunted’s upcoming, MetalSucks-sponsored headlining trek in order to go tour with the almighty Mastodon. And, yeah, it’s bittersweet news at best; we were looking forward to seeing them with The Haunted, but it’s not as though the Atlanta quartet is really any less awesome than our favorite Swedes.

Of course, the always spectacular non-Nazis in Nachtmystium are still doing The Haunted tour, and now the replacement bands for Intronaut and Kylesa have been announced: Merauder and The Agonist.

scion rock fest atlanta

That I’m sitting here in the MetalSucks Mansion this snowy Monday morning has gotta be some kinda heavy metal miracle; as I type this, Anton OyVey, Rob Pasbani from Metal Injection, our friends from BITPOM.com, and a lot of other fine friends are still stranded in Atlanta due to the weather.

And honestly, there are worse towns in which to be stranded. To my shock, not only is the booze in Atlanta shockingly cheap, not only is the purp somehow completely fucking magical, but the city is about as chill as you could hope for. I kinda miss it already.

But enough wistful reminiscing. After the jump, get my thoughts on some of the best bands of Saturday’s totally excellent Scion Rock Fest!

THE HAUNTED, LOST IN THE RUINS

Monday, February 23rd, 2009 at 3:00pm by

Actually I doubt that Scott Smith’s book or the ensuing cinematic adaptation really had much influence on the makers of The Haunted’s new video, “Trenches.” But, I’m sleepy and simple minded today and they’re both about killer plants, so, there ya have it. Deal with it, bitches.

The Haunted are doing an awesome tour later this year with Nachtmystium, Kylesa and Intronaut. While you’re waiting for it to come to your town, don’t forget to check out Haunted frontman Peter Dolving’s guest blogs for MetalSucks here and here.

KYLESA’S LEAN AND MEAN STATIC TENSIONS

Thursday, January 29th, 2009 at 12:00pm by

static-tensions

The excellence of Kylesa’s new album, Static Tensions, is rooted just as much in what it doesn’t do wrong as what it does right: Kylesa’s two drummers could have made them the Allman Brothers of metal (metal doesn’t need an Allman Brothers, as far as I’m concerned); their super down tuned guitars and classy, evocative amps could have lead to drone metal wankery; their sludgy riffs and clear penchant for marijuana could have lead to an entertaining, yet directionless, riff fest. But they eschew that whole thing all together, instead opting to make a concise and brilliant metal record, plain and simple, without indulging themselves in the sort of excess the genre can be known for. The best parts about having two drummers in a heavy-footed metal band, the best part about having lower-than-hell guitars and sweet amps, the best part about composing an album of wall to wall top shelf sludge riffs are all that’s present on Static Tensions, an admirably lean and to the point album that’ll rattle around your rib cage until it sticks there.
