Mean Deviation - Jeff Wagner

We love a good list to argue over here at MetalSucks, and we also love us some progressive metal. Based on the comments you guys leave here, I’d say y’all love both of those things too. So Noisecreep’s “Top 10 Progressive Metal Albums of 2011″ list should be right up your alley.

The list was written by Jeff Wagner, author of last year’s Mean Deviation: Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal, a must-read for any fan of prog. I’ve never doubted that Wagner, the ex-Metal Maniacs editor, doesn’t know his shit, but it’s always refreshing when someone who’s positioned himself as a historian of sorts is so in touch with the modern scene. Head on over to Noisecreep to check his picks; there’s a few albums you’d expect to see — Opeth and Hammers of Misfortune, to name a couple — and there are several surprises as well.

PHOTO CAPTION CONTEST: WIN A COPY OF THE BOOK MEAN DEVIATION: FOUR DECADES OF PROGRESSIVE HEAVY METAL

Thursday, August 18th, 2011 at 4:30pm by

Last week we offered a MetalSucks t-shirt of your choice and a grab bag of other swag from around the MS Mansion as the prize for our Photo Caption Contest, a mighty fine haul if you ask me. Here’s our winner:

  • Chris: “How nice of James and Ricky to spend some time with a handicapped Danish boy through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.”

This week we’re giving away a copy of the most excellent book Mean Deviation, a detailed history of the four decades (!) progressive heavy metal has graced this planet. The book was written by Jeff Wagner with a forward from Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson. To win, simply do what you always do so well: leave a comment with the funniest caption to the photo below (sent in by MS reader Kyle Palmer). Man, that shit reminds me of high school… do kids still take tests on Scantrons these days? Remember to use a real email address (or post it along with your comment if you’re using FB Connect / Twitter etc).
