ALBUM OF THE DAY — SPAWN: THE ALBUM

Monday, July 25th, 2011 at 10:00am by

If memory serves, the Spawn movie which came out in 1997 was pretty terrible, but we did get one great thing out of it: the soundtrack. It was pretty much like the Judgment Night soundtrack, only instead of combining metal bands with rap acts, it teamed up metal bands with electronica acts. And every song on it was innovative and amazing.

No, I’m totally kidding. The soundtrack sucked almost as bad as the movie.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: IF YOU COULD HAVE BEEN PRESENT FOR THE CREATION OF ANY SINGLE METAL ALBUM, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Welcome to “Question of the Week,” a (sometimes) weekly debate amongst the MetalSucks staff regarding a recent hot button issue.

For no particular reason whatsoever other than we thought it would be fun, this week we asked our writers:

IF YOU COULD HAVE BEEN PRESENT FOR THE CREATION OF ANY SINGLE METAL ALBUM, WHICH ONE WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

The MS staff’s answers after the jump.

I NOW OFFICIALLY DISLIKE DIAMONDSNAKE

Thursday, June 10th, 2010 at 4:30pm by

When we first heard about Diamondsnake, Moby’s new metal band with Dave “King of Metal” Hill and some other dudes, I had some questions about how they would walk that very line between actually-funny joke metal band (e.g., Gwar, Dethklok, etc.), and just-plain-stupid joke metal band.

And now that they’ve released a video, for the song “Storm the Fucking Kastle,” the answer has become apparent: they’re not going to walk that line. They are going to be very firmly on the side of just-plain-stupid joke metal band.

This video plays like the kind of thing you make with some friends for fun – but just because it makes you and your buddies laugh doesn’t mean it will do anything for the outside world. (I kinda suspect this is how SNL is written these days, too – I’m sure the “What Up with That” sketches seem hilarious in the writers’ room, but they’re really just tedious and dumb.) All the jokes here are obvious and consequently unfunny; it’s almost bordering on the level of a band like The Darkness, where I’m not even sure that people involved have any genuine affection for metal. In fact, if not for Hill’s presence, I’d say they don’t have any genuine affection for metal.

Check out the clip below, then agree or disagree with me in the comments section.

SO, UH, HOW MANY MORE “LEGENDARY” NYHC BANDS ARE LEFT TO REUNITE?

Thursday, May 13th, 2010 at 12:00pm by

2010 has already been an eventful year for reunited New York hardcore bands. Favorites like Cro-Mags and Killing Time, the latter of which dropped a great new album a couple months ago, have been playing live gigs. Agnostic Front performed a one-off show with their classic Victim In Pain and United Blood rhythm sections in lieu of their present recording/touring lineups. Recently, Bridge Nine announced the return of Underdog with a forthcoming complete discography and a handful upcoming live shows. Out of nowhere, Supertouch and Yuppicide have both returned to play this weekend’s Black N Blue Bowl. But now, despite my earlier elation, I’m starting to wonder if this trend is getting out of hand.

In the past 24 hours, I’ve learned about several more NYHC reunions. Late-eighties group Inside Out (not to be confused with Zack de la Rocha’s pre-RATM band of the same name) has also apparently reunited and are playing their “first show in 21 years” at Andrew W.K.’s Santos Party Haus. Additionally, BrooklynVegan scribe Black Bubblegum posted recently regarding reunited NYHC band Indecision, who have a show coming up at Knitting Factory in July. He also revealed that current New York resident Moby has regrouped with Vatican Commandos, his long-forgotten Connecticut hardcore act, for a July gig at Mercury Lounge.

So what’s going on?

MOBY GOES METAL

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 at 10:30am by

Moby is one of those guys, like Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo, who has never made it a secret that he has a proclivity for metal. But up ’til now, he’s never really gotten involved in the game; I mean, he almost produced Chinese Democracy, but that doesn’t really count for any number of reasons, not least of which is that everyone almost produced Chinese Democracy. MetalSucks intern Dave Mustein almost produced Chinese Democracy and I think he was still in diapers when they started recording it.

But now Moby is looking to enter the metal world at least semi-for reals, teaming up with two dudes I’ve never heard of (including some fruit who calls himself Tomato) and Dave “King of Metal” Hill, who has done some hilarious work for Metal Injection, to form Diamondsnake, a new band that seeks to combine “such disparate influences as rock, hard rock, metal, and heavy metal.”

MOBY CALLS GWAR “THE BEST LIVE BAND EVER”

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 at 4:00pm by

Annoying as he is, I’d love to talk metal with Moby someday. For one thing, he was ever-so-briefly the producer of Chinese Democracy, and I have a feeling he has some great Axl Rose stories.

For another thing, he was the guest editor for magnetmagazine.com last week, and he had some interesting things to say about Gwar:

Have you ever seen Gwar live? No? Rectify this immediately. The best live band ever. Really.
