It occurred to me sometime this afternoon that Frankie Palmeri may very well read what I wrote about him earlier today, and decide the best course of action is to invite me onto his tour bus to settle our conflict through calm, intelligent discussion, only to sucker punch me when the bus door opens. Thus, I have come with a new rule for life: NEVER GO ONTO A TERRIBLE DEATHCORE BAND’S TOUR BUS. Seems simple enough!

While I contemplate Thanos Bison Reignz coming after me during a solar apocalypse, here’s a rundown of some of the fun shit we did this week:

• We broke the news of new System of a Down tour dates! I’m very proud of Vince for his investigative journalism skills on this one. He’s a regular Carl Bernstein, that one.
• We enjoyed another excellent tour blog from Eluveitie.
• We checked out the new release from Derek Roddy’s Serpents Rise.
• We wondered, “Is Hatebreed the best hardcore band of all time?”
• We whined about the Grammys.
• We made you a totally romantic Valentine’s Day mix.
• We learned the value of telling women we like metal up front.
• We discovered djentstep.
• We likened a Deftones concert riot to a Mad Max movie, ’cause we’re sensitive like that.
• Our friends at Decibel let you hear the previously unreleased Lamb of God tune “Hit the Wall.” Say “Thank you, Decibel.”

So, one last reminder: next week sees the release of Volume 2 of NYC Sucks, our totally free comp collecting awesome bands from the New York area. But if you’re a total sour puss and awesome free music does nothing for you, we’ll have some other fun shit, too. ‘Til then…

Ghost’s Opus Eponymous, out this week on the CD format in the U.S., has garnered quite a bit of praise and has even drawn the ire of Sarah Palin.

New releases from Ghost (in the U.S.), Electric Wizard and Acid Witch make this week a great one for fans of psychadelic, doom, stoner and the like, while KsE side-project Times of Grace finally hits the shelves and NJ slammy death metallers Abacinate deliver their ripping tribute to fallen vocalist Jason “Plunger” Sica. And just like that it’s almost January 18th, the day we release Volume 1 of NYC Sucks, our very own FREE digital compilation of the best bands in NYC’s roaring metal scene. Can you tell we’re excited? You’ve certainly heard of some of these bands before — or perhaps you haven’t — but either way there will be plenty of new music here for everyone to enjoy, hand-picked by Vince and Axl. And at the very least you’ll have a great snapshot of what it’s like to be a metalhead in NYC in 2010.

Vince and I are in the process of putting the finishing touches on NYC Sucks, the two-volume, ABSOLUTELY FUCKING FREE comp we announced last month. Listening to the 27 tracks which are on the comp as we write the liner notes reminded me — as if I really needed reminding — how many incredible metal bands are currently a part of the New York scene, and how fortunate we are to live here. We’re SO STOKED to get to share these bands with you guys, I can’t even tell you. I wish we were putting this thing out today.

In case you didn’t read our initial announcement/smoked too much pot and forgot about it, here’s the rundown again: like I said, NYC Sucks will be split into two volumes, with the first one coming out on January 18 (which is less than two weeks away!), and the second coming out February 22nd.

NYC’s metal scene is literally exploding at the seams. There are so many great local bands playing shows on a regular basis that on any given night you’ve got to make some pretty hard choices about where to get your headbang on. We try and highlight some of our favorite local bands on MetalSucks from time to time, but frankly it’s just not possible to keep up; seemingly every month there’s another fantastic band that’s as good or better than any number of “signed” acts from around the U.S. or the world, only they’re not that well-known outside of our city’s borders. We’ve included a few smaller signed bands that we feel are an integral part of the scene, but for the most part all the acts on these compilations are not signed. Both compilations will be available for download right here on MetalSucks, will contain high-quality 320kbps MP3s, and will include a PDF of digital liner notes with information about all the bands. And because the whole point of this thing is to spread the word of all the great bands we have around here, both volumes will be available completely for FREE.
