BTBAM’S TOMMY ROGERS + OWEN HART DID IT FOR DIME

Monday, January 31st, 2011 at 4:30pm by

We love Tommy Rogers, we love Owen Hart, and, of course, we love Pantera — so combining all three makes for one awesome metal sandwich.

Rogers recently hopped on-stage with Owen Hart to join them for some Pantera covers, and, of course, someone caught it all on video. The quality’s not 100%, but it’s good enough to know that the bright ray of sunshine you felt on your face today was Dime smiling in approval.

Here’s “Domination…”

…and if you head over to Metal Injection, you can check out “Mouth for the War,” too.

Tommy Rogers will release his new solo album (under the name Thomas Giles), Pulse, tomorrow  on Metal Blade; Owen Hart’s latest, Earth Control, is out now on Vitriol. You can read my review here.

Friday, January 14th, 2011 at 5:00pm by

So 2011 is officially underway! I mean, we’re two full weeks in — time to stop accidentally writing “2010″ as the date on shit, y’know? We started to preview some albums we’re stoked about, and will continue to do so next week. In the meantime, here’s some other fun crap we did this week:

Next week brings more debuts, more interviews, and more general Suckitude. See ya then.

EXCLUSIVE TRACK DEBUT: OWEN HART’S “44 BLACK”

Thursday, January 13th, 2011 at 1:00pm by

Reviewing Owen Hart’s Earth Control earlier this week, Axl wrote that “If there is a formula for kicking ass, Owen Hart seem to have discovered it.” Well, now’s your chance to experience that formula for yourself: MetalSucks is proud to debut Owen Hart’s track “44 Black” in advance of Earth Control‘s Vitriol Records release this coming Tuesday, January 18. It is going to rip you a new asshole, 110% guaranteed, so crank that shit LOUD and make sure there are no small children in the vicinity before you hit “play.”

And once you realize that Owen Hart are one of your new favorite bands, you can pre-order Earth Control on both CD and vinyl here.

OWEN HART’S EARTH CONTROL WILL DROP YOU 78 FEET FROM A HARNESS

Monday, January 10th, 2011 at 4:00pm by

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to get your face fucked right the fuck off.

Even though Owen Hart had two of the best songs on the second edition of Scott Hull’s This Comp Kills Fascists last year, I did not immediately rush to listen to my promo copy of Earth Control when it arrived. Never again will I make this mistake. Earth Control announces Owen Hart an unstoppable force of FUCK YOU in metal. Pay attention.

OWEN HART TAKE YOU TO “METHLAHEM”

Friday, December 17th, 2010 at 10:40am by

Alright alright alright. I know everyone is still arguing about the best albums of 2010, but whatever. I’m over it. It’s done. It happened. It’s yesterday. 2010 is so 2010. It’s time to move on to 2011.

And the first great full-length of 2011, at least as far as this blogger is concerned, is Owen Hart’s Earth Control.

I don’t wanna say TOO much about how awesome this album is, ’cause I’m gonna post a full review in January… but I do wanna emphasize that it rules, and that it rules hard. Owen Hart were one of the best bands on the second volume of Scott Hull’s The Comp Kills Fascists last year, but I was still totally unprepared for Earth Control. Consider my socks knocked off.

Now you can get your socks knocked off, too — or at least a part of a sock or something. They’re streaming a track from Earth Control, “Methlahem,” over at Brooklyn Vegan. Guys. It’s ssssssoooo fucking good. Stop reading this, and go listen. Go listen, go listen, go listen. Like I said, I’ll have a review in January… and maybe we’ll be streaming a track of our own…

Earth Control comes out January 18 on Vitriol. Allow me to take this moment to once again remind you that Owen Hart are doing three shows with Graf Orlock this weekend, which I’m sure are gonna be insane — in fact, I’m totally jealous of anyone who gets to go, and anyone has a chance to go and doesn’t is just a damn fool. Dates after the jump.

THE BEST METAL ALBUMS OF 2010, AS CHOSEN BY METAL MUSICIANS THEMSELVES — PART IV

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010 at 5:00pm by

FEATURING MEMBERS OF ISIS, MUNICIPAL WASTE, ELUVEITIE, WORMROT, LAST CHANCE TO REASON, ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA, GOD DETHRONED, OWEN HART, NIGHTFALL, HORSEBACK, AND OCTOBER TIDE

For 2010, we decided to do something special as part of our regular end-of-year festivities here at MetalSucks — namely, ask musicians from across the vast spectrum of the metalsphere (or, in a few cases, the almost-metalsphere) what their favorite albums of the year were. Death metallers, thrash metallers, black metallers, stoners, grinders, and djenters alike graciously contributed lists to MS, and we’ll be running them in groups of ten to eleven musicians at a time twice a day for the rest of the week.

After the jump, check out the fourth group… we hope you enjoy seeing what some of metal’s heaviest hitters were into this year as much as we have!

(And please note that these are musicians and that they, um, have a lot on their minds. So some of ‘em named albums that actually came out last year. Please don’t freak out.)

THE PACKAGING FOR GRAF ORLOCK’S DOOMBOX IS SSSSSSSSSIIIICCCCCCKKKKKK

Thursday, December 9th, 2010 at 10:40am by

Graf Orlock have a history of doing insanely cool shit for their album packaging — 2007′s Destination Time Tomorrow, for example, was held in the grasp of a facehugger from the Alien franchise — but I think it’s safe to say that they’ve pretty much outdone themselves, and just about everyone else, with the packaging for their new EP, Doombox (our review here). From the official press release:

Behold, the Doombox EP, whose packaging consists of an actual-size (30”x10”x10”) fold-out cardstock “boombox.”  The “boombox” holds the Doombox EP in 10” vinyl and CD formats, as well as a separate CD containing the band’s three previous releases, known collectively as the Destination Time Trilogy.

And here’s a pic of the full set:

TWO (MINI?) TOURS YOU SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW ABOUT: GRAF ORLOCK/OWEN HART AND SCOTT KELLY/WINO

Monday, December 6th, 2010 at 2:00pm by

I’ve been listening to Graf Orlock’s Doombox EP so much these past couple of weeks that I can now recite a movie quote from a movie I’ve never seen (that would be Harsh Times). The whole thing is under twelve minutes long (read Sammy O’Hagar’s rightfully-glowing review here), so it’s easy to listen to as an aid for short bursts of disrupted internet service/”FUCK YOU TIME WARNER CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!”-inspired rage. I’m so obsessed with the EP, in fact, that I now outright hate the people of Tacoma, Vancouver, and Portland, as those are the only three towns Graf Orlock will be hitting up on their upcoming mini-tour with the also-awesomeOwen Hart (whose contributions to this year’s second edition of Scott Hull-curated This Comp Kills Fascists were two of the highlights of that collection). Hopefully these dudes make it to other parts of the country in the not-too-distant future, ’cause I’m dying to see this shit played live.

So while we usually try not to cover regional tours ’cause so few of you will ever get to go, my envy of people who can attend these shows is such that I am going to post all three dates:

Dec 17 – Tacoma, WA @ The Redroom
Dec 18 – Vancouver, BC @ Garbage Mountain
Dec 19 – Portland, OR @ Branx

Go if you’re lucky enough to live in that part of the country.

Meanwhile, The PRP tells me that Scott Kelly and Wino are gonna be doing some shows together next year. They call the itinerary after the jump the “initial dates,” so hopefully there will be more soon, ’cause that sounds like a show that many of you might enjoy.

The aforementioned “initial dates” are…

THIS STREAM KILLS FASCISTS

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010 at 11:30am by

It was just a month ago that Scott Hull’s This Comp Kills Fascists Vol. 2 was announced, and look! It’s coming out this Tuesday, June 22 on Relapse! I think our resident powerviolence expert, Sergeant D., is working on a semi-formal review, which I am honestly waiting for with baited breath, as it’s sure to be insightful, hilarious, and enraging pretty much all at once.  And I’m sure you’re excited, too.

While we all hold hands and wait, you can now actually stream the entire album right here. Like I said, it was compiled by the great Scott Hull (you either knew he was from Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed or fuck yourself) and features Drugs of Faith, Crom, Apartment 213, Owen Hart, Noisear, and a plethora of other excellent grind, powerviolence and hardcore acts. And one of the most fun aspects of a project like this is that while you may know some of the bands, you may very well not know them all, and now you get to learn about some cool bands you didn’t know before from someone awesome (that would be the aforementioned Mr. Hull). I didn’t know Owen Hart before Comp Deuce, for example, and I’m really digging them. Thanks, Scott!!!

So go listen.

THESE PREVIEWS KILL FASCISTS…

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010 at 10:30am by

A couple of weeks ago we got word that Scott Hull was putting together a second edition of This Comp Kills Fascists; that news alone was enough to make us excited, because a) we loved Comp volume one, and b) we’ll spend money on pretty much anything that has the words “Scott Hull” on it. (Pretty much anything. There are obviously exceptions.)

Now a complete list of bands that Hull has selected to appear on the comp has been released – although not a track list. I just think that’s worth mentioning because with bands like these, the songs tend to be pretty short, and on the last comp, all the bands got multiple songs – so if you look at this list and think “Gee, that’s it?”, well, it’s safe to assume that there will still be plenty of music to be had here.

Maybe even more importantly – since I don’t think this line-up is as overtly impressive as the one for Comp. 1 (which had Brutal Truth and Insect Warfare and some other “flashier” bands, at least inasmuch as there’s such a thing as a flashy grind band) – there’s now a preview page for the album, which is currently streaming tracks by Despise You, Apartment 213, Owen Hart, and Idiot’s Parade. So if you look at this list and you’re all, “Fuck are these dudes?,” well, head over there to hear some awesome awesomeness.

List of the included bands after the jump. And because I’m a swell fella, I’ve included MySpace links for all of them, so you can check ‘em out now if you’re not already familiar with them.
