HARVEY MILK HELPS NPR GET A WHOLE LOT HIPPER

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 at 10:30am by

I haven’t listened to NPR since I made the mistake of taking out Jonathan “I Am Boring as Fuck” Schwartz’s daughter once in college, because, well, Patton Oswalt pretty much nails in the above clip: it is true insomniac radio. But as Metal Insider points out, NPR just took an evolutionary leap in coolness by streaming Harvey Milk’s new album, A Small Turn of Human Kindness, in its entirety. Give it a listen here.

I know I seriously endanger my beardo cred (Do I even have any beardo cred? I haven’t had a beard since last September.) every time I admit that “I don’t get Harvey Milk,” but I don’t get Harvey Milk. Still, I’m sure that everyone cooler than me is jizzing all over themselves about this one. So after you’ve listened to the album, please explain to me what I’m not hearing. Or just stroke my ego by telling me I’m right. Y’know. Whatever.

A Small Turn of Human Kindness comes out May 18 on Hydra Head.

BRIAN POSEHN: THE COMEDIAN WHO’S “MORE METAL THAN YOU” TALKS TO METALSUCKS

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010 at 2:00pm by

Like a lot of people, I first became familiar with Brian Posehn because of his time on David Cross and Bob Odenkirk’s brilliant HBO sketch comedy series, Mr. Show, for which he was also a writer. A few years after that show went off the air, my then-roommate and I went to see Posehn do some stand-up at a comedy club here in New York. I don’t think we were even there to see Posehn specifically – if memory serves, David Cross was the actual draw for us – but he was so funny that I actually laughed so hard I became winded and fell out of my chair. Since then, he’s been on a very, very short list of stand-ups that I never miss the chance to check out when they come through town. Mr. Show sketches about a fictional band called “Titannica” led me to believe that someone on the series’ writing staff was a metal fan, but I didn’t know that it was Posehn until later – and the revelation that he was just as obsessed with metal as I was only made him that much cooler.

Fart and Wiener Jokes, Posehn’s second album for Relapse, comes out today (and you can order a copy here). Like its predecessor, Live: In Nerd Rage, it features not only recordings of his brilliant stand-up, but also an original song he co-wrote with Anthrax’s Scott Ian (“More Metal Than You”) to poke fun at some of metal’s more regrettable foibles. It also has a metal cover of Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler,” and between the two music tracks, Posehn has managed to rope in guest appearances by such all-stars as Jamey Jasta, Mark Morton, Mark Oseguenda, John Tempesta, and Russ Parrish. Assuming you love great comedy and great metal, there’s no way you’re not gonna dig Fart and Wiener Jokes.

A few weeks ago I got to talk to Posehn about putting comedy albums out on a metal label, what it’s like to be friends with some of his boyhood heroes, the state of metal today, his take on the Anthrax vocalist situation, and more. He even turned the tables at the end and asked me a question! Read the complete transcript of our chat after the jump.

MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN’S BLOOD INTO WINE GETS RELEASE DATES!

Friday, January 22nd, 2010 at 12:00pm by

Last month we told you about Blood Into Wine, the new documentary about the winery owned by Tool’s Maynard James Keenan. The fascinating subject matter – both Maynard and the wine – combined with a cool trailer and the promise of cameos by Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk, and some other famous people I care less about, suggested that this was, at the very least, going to be a fun movie.

Well, now it has release dates! The press release says that these are the “first nationwide screenings,” which suggests that other markets should get it soon. But that kind of decision often rests on how much money a film makes during its initial run. Which is my way of saying: if anyone sees this and it actually turns out to be good, please let us know, and please spread the word so that we get it here in NYC. Not be selfish or anything.

Release dates and locations after the jump.

MAYNARD JAMES KEENAN TURNS BLOOD INTO WINE

Friday, December 11th, 2009 at 4:00pm by

So not only does Tool’s Maynard James Keenan have his own winery, but someone made a documentary about it? How did this news completely escape me ’til now?

No matter. Blood into Wine, the documentary in question, is going to premiere at the W Hotel in Scottsdale, AZ on Feb. 19 at 7:00 pm. It will also see a limited theatrical release that same day, followed by a DVD release in the spring.

The process of making wine is actually pretty fascinating, but I’d be lying if I said my primary interest in this film isn’t getting a better glimpse of “a larger picture of the often reclusive singer,” as the press release promises. For all the times I’ve seen Tool and A Perfect Circle live and all the interviews with the guy I’ve read, I still don’t feel like I really know him. Of course, that’s part of Maynard’s appeal – in the trailer for the flick, he admits that “I’ve made a career out of not giving away the whole farm” – but I’d still love to try and get some kind of feel for who Maynard actually is. And the fact that Patton Oswalt, Bob Odenkirk, and some other cool non-metal peeps are all in the movie doesn’t hurt.

PATTON OSWALT INTERVIEWS MAYNARD!

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007 at 10:57am by

So there’s this thing on MySpace interview show now called Artist on Artist. If you can’t figure out what it is – well, get to a doctor, because you can probably be declared a legal ree-ree and get a handicapped sticker for your car or something.

ANYWAY, we’ve gotten press releases about these interviews in the past, and usually we don’t really find them worthwhile – personally, I couldn’t think of any possible celebrity combination more full of shit than Michael Moore and Tom Morello… until they got Chester Bennington to interview Nikki Sixx. Yeah, I’m sure those two had lots of interesting, totally non-self-involved things to say.

But now they’ve got an interivew with Maynard and Patton Oswalt, and that gets me pretty excited. Oswalt is, for better or worse, probably best known as the rat in that last Pixar flick – but he’s really a truly brilliant stand-up, who has a great routine about how “If you listened to metal in the 80′s, then you’re gay.” Which is probably true.

But I digress. Here’s Oswalt’s interview with Maynard… enjoy!
