COUNTDOWN TO BLACKENED MUSIC, PART 2: PIG DESTROYER’S “PISS ANGEL”

Friday, July 31st, 2009 at 4:30pm by

I was watching the new show Michael and Michael Have Issues last night. It’s pretty funny. Anyways, the episode was about this dude who breaks up with this chick because she wants him to pee on her and he’s just not that into that kinda thing. I’m not into it, either, but it did get me thinking: how in love with a girl would I have to be to actually pee on her if she asked me? Or would she just have to be really hot? Like, could I find it in me to give Cristina Scabbia a golden shower? I somehow don’t think I could. But it is a good time-waster when you’re high and have nothing better to ponder.

ANYWAY, I think my boderline-stalker love of Pig Destroyer is pretty well documented at this point, so without further adieu, here they are performing “Piss Angel” at the 2004 Maryland (not Baxter County) Deathfest.

COUNTDOWN TO BLACKENED MUSIC, PART 1: REPULSION’S “BODILY DISMEMBERMENT”

Friday, July 31st, 2009 at 4:00pm by

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m very, very, very excited about tonight’s Blackened Music Series show with Brutal Truth, Pig Destroyer and Repulsion (And it’s a book release party for Decibel’s Precious Metal, which I have read, and which is totally worth the dough). And thus, as I count down the final hours to what I’m 99.9% sure is going to be one of the best, if not the best, shows of the year, I’m gonna post some live clips of the bands playing.

First up we have the legendary Repulsion. If ya don’t know Repulsion, well, shame on you. Learning about them is the easiest thing in the world: they only have one full-length, 1986′s Horrified, which is pretty short (it is a grind album, after all), and which pretty much influenced all grind that came afterwards. Decibel even named Horrified the best grind album of all time earlier this year; I don’t know if I’d go that far, but it does rule, hard, and the band – in their first New York concert ever – will be playing it in its entirety tonight.

Here they are doing the track “Bodily Dismemberment” in 2003.

THE 51ST REASON I LOVE PIG DESTROYER

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009 at 3:30pm by

Thanks to all the commenters who pointed out that I left a ridiculously awesome to worship at the alter of Pig Destroyer off of my list yesterday: this below video.

In case you’ve never seen it, the short version is that vocalist J.R. Hayes’ mic died in the middle of a performance at CBGB, so the dude just keeps yelling… and is so loud he can still be heard over the music. That seriously might be the single most metal thing that has ever happened in the history of time and space.

Holy shit, do I fucking love this band.

ALBUMS WE WISH HAD MADE THE LIST: PIG DESTROYER – TERRIFYER

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 at 5:00pm by

21best1terrifyer

Pig Destroyer, Terrifyer (Relapse, 2004)
J.R. Hayes – Vocals
Scott Hull – Guitars
Brian Harvey – Drums
Produced by Scott Hull

Of the three Pig Destroyer albums our panelists voted for, Terrifyer scored the lowest. But it’s still my favorite PD offering, so fuck it, I’m gonna go ahead and write about it.

Ahem.

HOW THE FUCKING FUCK DID PIG DESTROYER NOT WIND ON THIS LIST? Their place in the grind pantheon is, like almost anything, open for debate, but at least as far as I’m concerned, they perfected grind, they epitomize grind, THEY ARE GRINDCORE.

THE BEST SHOW OF THE YEAR?

blackened-july-31-poster

When I read that Repulsion, Pig Destroyer and Brutal Truth are all playing a show together at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple on July 31, my head literally exploded. I don’t mean “literally” the way some people misuse that word; I mean I am actually typing this right now sans melon. Pretty crazy, I know.

AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED FINALLY RECORD AN ALBUM BETTER THAN THEIR NAME

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 at 1:00pm by

agorapocalypse

Given his godly tenure with Pig Destroyer, I’d never question Scott Hull’s songwriting skill. Given his confidential government IT dayjob, it’d be inadvisable to criticize the dude anyway, lest I find myself the unwitting victim of extraordinary rendition to Uzbekistan. But it’s still a welcome surprise that for the first time in over a decade, Hull’s other grind band, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, has songs notable for something other than their brevity. ANb’s third full-length, Agorapocalypse, has nothing on 2003’s 3-inch, 100-track Altered States of America in terms of novelty. What it does have is groove, structure and listenability up the ass. I just listened to it three times in a row and it’s not even 9am. And my ass hurts.

NEXT IDIOT TO MENTION SWINE FLU GETS A KICK IN THE NUTS

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009 at 3:00pm by

This morning a friend of mine was riding the subway. Being afflicted with terrible allergies (as I am myself), he sneezed (into his hand – not the open air) and rubbed his sore eyes – at which point some fuckwit apparently started screaming at him about spreading swine flu and told him he should be wearing a mask. At which point, God bless him, my friend did the only logical thing: he started coughing in the fucker’s face.

PEOPLE: YOU DO NOT HAVE FUCKING SWINE FLU. THIS IS NOT A PANDEMIC. CALM THE FUCK DOWN. At best, this is the media’s way of distracting us from all the other fucked up shit going on right now. And if by some fucking chance it is mankind’s time to return to the dark ages – WHICH IT FUCKING IS NOT – well, you can’t say we didn’t have it coming.

Speaking of swine and people acting like fucking maniacs: here’s Pig Destroyer’s video for “Piss Angel,” off of 2001′s Prowler in the Yard. Thanks to my comrade Gary Suarez for the suggestion.

THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA: AXL’S POST-SCION REPORT

scion rock fest atlanta

That I’m sitting here in the MetalSucks Mansion this snowy Monday morning has gotta be some kinda heavy metal miracle; as I type this, Anton OyVey, Rob Pasbani from Metal Injection, our friends from BITPOM.com, and a lot of other fine friends are still stranded in Atlanta due to the weather.

And honestly, there are worse towns in which to be stranded. To my shock, not only is the booze in Atlanta shockingly cheap, not only is the purp somehow completely fucking magical, but the city is about as chill as you could hope for. I kinda miss it already.

But enough wistful reminiscing. After the jump, get my thoughts on some of the best bands of Saturday’s totally excellent Scion Rock Fest!

SLAVE TO THE MAGRUDERGRIND

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008 at 1:15pm by

If you’re not familiar with Magrudergrind, it’s because media outlets (including this one) don’t give them enough coverage. But they have to be one of the best grind bands on the scene right now; 2007′s Rehashed was pretty fuckin’ good, but the three songs they contributed to Scott Hull’s This Comp Kills Fascists were even better.

The band has now signed with Willow Tip and are entering the studio to make a new album which will be engineered by Converge’s Kurt Ballou and mastered by The Inimitable Mr. Hull himself. Which means that along with the new Napalm Death album (and some new Pig Destroyer, pretty pretty please?), grind fans have least two albums in ’09 that they know will be good.

THE MOST METAL BURGERS ON THE PLANET

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 at 11:02am by

When I think of metal and food, I usually think of microwavable burritos, overpriced festival vendors, and terrible, life threatening, ass ripping diarrhea.

Luckily for all of us, that will now change.

See, I’ve never been to The Windy City, but now I have reason to go: Chicago restaurant Kuma’s Corner, which features burgers and sandwiches named after every band from Sabbath to Metallica to Slayer to Maiden to Pig Destroyer to Lair of the Minotaur to Mayhem to Mastodon, whose honorary burger, pictured left, comes topped in BBQ Sauce, cheddar cheese, bacon, and frizzled onions.

Fuck. Now I’m hungry.

THIS BLOG POST KILLS FASCISTS

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008 at 2:01pm by

Just yesterday I was complaining about a lack of decent grindcore thus far in ’08, and now here comes the reunited Brutal Truth to tell me to sop my bellyachin’, punch me in the teeth, and spit on me when I’m down.

“Turmoil,” currently streaming on the band’s MySpace page, is one of four new songs the band recorded late last year, and will appear on This Comp Kills Fascists, an upcoming compilation (duh) that will be released on Relapse later this year. The album is being put together by Scott Hull of Pig Destroyer and Agoraphobic Nosebleed fame, and will feature some of our other favorite grind acts, including Total Fucking Destruction, the soon to be broken up Insect Warfare, and Deciblog faves Magrudergrind (If you don’t know Magrudergrind check out their contribution to the comp, “Burden,” here. Seriously. So fucking worth your time).

And now that I’ve been writing about it for a minute and listening to the new Brutal Truth and Magrudergrind tracks, I am suddenly very, very excited about this album. Yowza.

CRAPPY FAN FILMED FOOTAGE OF THE AT THE GATES REUNION! HOO-RAY!

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008 at 10:22am by

Blabbermouth has posted the below footage of At the Gates playing one of their first reunion shows in Japan this past week as part of a tour with Dillinger Escape Plan, Pig Destroyer, Into Eterenity and Mayhem (Holy purple poop, that’s a sweet tour!). At the Gates don’t show up ’til the 6:43 mark, but it’s actually kinda worth it to just sit through the Pig Destroyer and DEP footage.

Obviously this isn’t the highest quality video, but the band sounds pretty killer to me. What do y’all think?

A SCOTT HULL SOLO ALBUM IS SOMETHING TO GET EXCITED ABOUT

Thursday, April 24th, 2008 at 5:01pm by

requiem.jpgScott Hull is the fuckin’ man dude. Aside from his God-like contributions to Pig Destroyer, Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Anal Cunt (does this dude have a talent for being in bands with awesome names or what?), he also has some kind of top-secret government computer job, which probably means he’s reading this and ordering a wire tap on my phone even as I type this. Or, at the very least, that he’s the one responsible for hacking Metal Sludge. Scott Hull don’t suffer no Enuff Z’Nuff songs.

ANYWAYS, Lambgoat is now reporting that Hull has his first solo album, Requiem, coming out one June 10 in the US and June 16 everywhere else:

“According to Relapse, “Requiem sees Hull explore his long-time love for movies and cinema score in the form of a beautifully crafted piece of work’…

“Advance song titles from the album include: ‘Consequenze,’ ‘Visita all’ospedale,’ ‘Morte sul treno,’ and ‘Il funerale di Bonnie.’”

“Il funerale di Bonnie” is already the best song title I’ve heard all year. The other titles apparently translate to “Visit to the Hospital” and “Died on the Train,” which are, um, well, I dunno.

The audio samples currently avail on Hull’s MySpace page aren’t very grindy or even very metal at all – in fact, that hospital visit track kind of reminds me of a Tangerine Dream song – but I guess there’d be no point making a solo album if it was just gonna sound like Pig Destroyer without J.R. Hayes and Brian Harvey (and Blake Harrison, I suppose).

But here’s the really interesting part of this news: the cover art refers to the album as an “Original Motion Picture Soundtrack.” If Hull is making a movie to go with this music, I’ll pee myself.

NEW PIG DESTROYER VIDEO! NEW PIG DESTROYER VIDEO! NEW PIG DESTROYER VIDEO!

Friday, October 12th, 2007 at 10:41am by

Listen: we need to talk. Other than to comment on the “weirdness” of my review for their latest album, Phantom Limb, you guys and girls don’t seem too interested in Pig Destroyer. And here’s the thing: Pig Destroyer are friggin’ AWESOME. Their name promises music so brutal it will destroy swine, but there’s a very real possibility that listening to them could fuck you up for life, too. In fact, I’m not even sure the number of the four outta five horns I gave Phantom Limb is a high enough rating; this band is, very simply, the best grindcore act on the planet right now.

So here’s their latest video, for the song “Loathsome.” I also encourage you to head over to MetalKult.com, who have some super-sweet live videos of the band performing in Brooklyn this past June. I somehow missed that show, but check out that crowd – the pit looks INSANE.
