GET OFF TONIGHT IN NYC WITH PUNK SUPERGROUP OFF!

Thursday, October 21st, 2010 at 2:40pm by

We’re not huge punk-lovers here at Metalisbad but this certainly seems worthy of mention…

The (anti?) super group OFF! is made up of Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, Black Flag) with Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), Dmitri Coats (Burning Brides) and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes). Vice Records is putting out four EPs in a box as a debut in November, and the first 7″ came out last week.

OFF! will play a CMJ show TONIGHT at Club Europa in their first NYC appearance ever (with Cerebral Ballzy).

ed hardy punk shirt“… so we’ll celebrate by charging $154 for an ugly t-shirt made by teens in a sweat-shop in Taiwan, to be worn by privileged suburban white males who wear supposed ‘punk’ clothing as a badge of identity.” – Ed Hardy [via Metal Insider]

Punk is officially dead.

DISSONANCE IS THE NEW PINK

Friday, October 12th, 2007 at 2:24pm by

apiary-lostinfocusThis band is my second favorite discovery of the last year, after these guys.

Earlier this Spring, five other people and I saw Apiary tear the Tap Bar at New York’s Knitting Factory to SHREDS, and my conception of what perfectly dissonant metalcore should be hasn’t been the same since.

The band’s precise, angular attack is extremely energetic, and not only incorporates straight-up metal influences but punk and thrash as well, and the amount of creamy dissonance the guitar players throw in almost warrants a new genre in itself.

SSSPEAKING OF SSSEATTLE…

Akimbo - cloaked dudes

I thankfully got to see the Seattle power trio Akimbo play earlier this year in Austin, TX, at SXSW 2007 and they did not disappoint. Their prolific back catalog is filled with pulsating, punk-tinged metal and occasionally Motorhead-ish aggression throughout, but their sound has certainly evolved over the last seven years and so therefore it may take checking out tracks from a few different albums to find an appropriate match that will not disappoint you and your discerning taste. Luckily, Akimbo has downloadable cuts from each of their five albums up on their website for your listening pleasure.

As for their new album, Navigating The Bronze, I can’t say much about it as I’ve only heard a few tracks thus far, but the band sounds way stonier than ever before, which is usually a good thing.

If you’re in the MetalSucks European contingent (or simply on holiday overseas, you rich bastard!), go see this band tear it up; they’ll be touring across the pond for a few weeks beginning at the end of October.
