CHILDREN OF BODOM/DEVIN TOWNSEND TOUR A REALITY — AND OBSCURA AND SEPTICFLESH ARE COMIN’ ALONG, TOO!

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011 at 12:30pm by

It’s been almost a month since Devin Townsend spilled the beans that he was doing a summer tour with Children of Bodom — and now that tour has finally and officially been announced. That’s already a super-sexy package, but Obscura and Septicflesh are on the bill, too, which makes these shows downright unmissable.

And there’s really not much else to say, is there? It’s almost impossible for me to believe that any metal fan doesn’t love at least 75% of this bill.

Here are dates…

RANDOM METAL VIDEO OF THE DAY: TWO GREEK DUDES HEADBANGING TO A BRASS BAND

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010 at 2:00pm by

Yep! This was filmed in Monastiraki Square in Athens. If these fellas get this excited about a brass band, imagine how apeshit they must go at a Septic Flesh show.

behemothFirst show of the the new year for me proved to be a great one. Local black metallers Woe, who recently signed to Candlelight Records, opened the night up a little early with hypnotizing riffage, closing the set with “Condemned with Prey.” In spite of the starting times having been changed, Woe’s creator Chris Grigg commented, “Despite the venue’s unprofessional decision to make us play 40 minutes prior to the advertised start of the show, we are confident that those who were in attendance were suitably deafened and offended.”

Next up, Metal Blade’s Lightning Swords of Death proclaimed their evil with gauntlets on and shirts off. Definitely one of the most epic performances I’ve seen in a while. Septic Flesh were welcomed to the stage by the ever-growing crowd as they expertly melded live music with pre-recorded
backing vocal and synth tracks, making the more intoxicated audience members scream for more in a pretty demanding way. The photo pit started getting crowded at this point, so I apologize for a lack of shots of the drummer.

As the kids began getting antsy, a chorus of “BE-HE-MOTH” chants began to rise from the floor, finally erupting in a wave of guttural screaming once the band finally took stage. While some kids just head-banged, otherss found it necessary to run around like oafs, knocking each other down, spinning, and generally being meatheads.

Photos after the jump.

AN AWESOME TOUR (THAT WE CAN’T GO TO)

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009 at 3:30pm by

behemothtourEver heard that Behemoth have breaks built into their set so they can run off stage and do some corpse paint touch-ups? To be fair, I’m not sure if the person who told me that was being honest or just joshin’ me, but it makes sense – the band definitely runs off stage from time to time, leaving the crowd to listen to pre-taped orchestral apocalyptic goodness.

True or not, it doesn’t change the fact that Behemoth absolutely crushed in their too-brief set on this past summer’s Rockstar Mayhem Yadda Yadda tour, or the fact that we were looking forward to seeing them do a proper headlining set. So now they’ve finally announced a tour – with Septic fucking Flesh, no less – and it’s hitting NYC the same night as the BTBAM/Cynic/Devin Townsend/Scale the Summit Orgasm Tour. I don’t know what rocket scientists set that up, but now metal fans in our area will have a tough decision to make. We are going to the Orgasm Tour, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish there were multiple mes, like in that awful Michael Keaton movie.

ANYWAY, here are dates for the Behemoth tour. We envy those of you who can make it.

THE DEVIL WENT DOWN TO GEORGIA: AXL’S POST-SCION REPORT

scion rock fest atlanta

That I’m sitting here in the MetalSucks Mansion this snowy Monday morning has gotta be some kinda heavy metal miracle; as I type this, Anton OyVey, Rob Pasbani from Metal Injection, our friends from BITPOM.com, and a lot of other fine friends are still stranded in Atlanta due to the weather.

And honestly, there are worse towns in which to be stranded. To my shock, not only is the booze in Atlanta shockingly cheap, not only is the purp somehow completely fucking magical, but the city is about as chill as you could hope for. I kinda miss it already.

But enough wistful reminiscing. After the jump, get my thoughts on some of the best bands of Saturday’s totally excellent Scion Rock Fest!
