LET’S MAKE THIS THE TOP HEAVY METAL HALLOWEEN COSTUME OF 2011

Wednesday, July 13th, 2011 at 11:30am by

Well this is pretty funny.

Reader Zach Gates e-mailed us to say that his friend had actually made a Devin Townsend skullet wig: “It took him forever to MAKE the wig by hand. He got a bald cap and a regular wig and spent a few days cutting, dreadlocking, and gluing the whole thing together.” And while that probably sounds like an insane amount of work for no real reason, Zach’s buddy did get some payoff in the end:

So, yeah, WORTH IT.

In case you somehow forgot, Devin (the real one, not the dude in the wig) is currently on tour with Children of Bodom, Obscura, and Septicflesh. Get remaining dates here. If you do something as awesome as Zach’s friend, maybe you can get yer picher taken with Devy, too!

DEVIN TOWNSEND IS SELLING HIS OLD SPATULA ON EBAY

Monday, May 9th, 2011 at 12:30pm by

In an apparent effort to weed out his most King of Comedy-fucknuts fan (Hey, it’s actually not me!), Devin Townsend is selling his old spatula on eBay.

As of this writing, bidding on this most prized of kitchen utensils is up to a hundred bucks. That’s a hundred bucks for a used, burned spatula. About ninety-five dollars more than anyone would ever pay for a new spatula. Just because Devin Townsend, like, touched it.

CONTEST: WIN A ONE-OF-A-KIND OBSCURA VAPORIZER FROM RELAPSE RECORDS AND SILVER SURFER!

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 at 4:20pm by

So, yeah, 4/20 might have been last week, but better late than never — we have an awesome weed-themed contest for you!

Above you see a photo of an awesome, ONE OF A KIND, Silver Surfer-produced, Obscura vaporizer, with a retail value of $600. And we’re just gonna give it away to one lucky winner! Plus, oh yeah, some copies of Obscura’s orgasm-inducingly good new album, Omnivium (out now on Relapse — order one here!), and some sweet Obscura merch, too.

Here’s how you win:

  • Anytime between now and June 17 — one week before Obscura kick off their most excellent summer tour with Children of Bodom, Devin Townsend, and Septicflesh — send an e-mail to MetalSucks with “OBSCURA VAPE CONTEST” in the subject line.
  • In the e-mail, include a design for a weed smoking device that would be ideal for use in outer space (in keeping with the theme of Obscura’s album art for both Omnivium and Cosmogenesis). How you present that design is entirely up to you — you can just describe it (but be colorful… this is MetalSucks, not your high school science fair), or send in a drawing, a diagram, pictures of a sculpture, or, if you really wanna go for the gold, a photo of an actual working unit.
  • OBSCURA THEMSELVES (!!!) WILL JUDGE THE WINNERS, which we’ll announce just before they kick off the aforementioned most excellent tour.
  • One grand-prize winner will get the vape (including a soft carrier and all necessary accessories — e.g. a glass blower, tube, etc.), a copy of Omnivium, and an Obscura t-shirt.
  • Two runners-up will get a copy of Omnivium and an Obscura t-shirt.
  • Unlike so many of our contests, this one is actually open to fans from around the world! In part because the vape actually has European voltage/wiring, which means non-Europeans will have to purchase a converter

And that’s it! We’re really stoked on this contest — remember, this is a one of a kind vaporizer that you cannot get anywhere else – so get crackin’! The more creative your entry, the better your chances of winning. Good luck!

And after the jump, check out more pics of the vaporizer in question, plus get tour dates for that Children of Bodom/Devin Townsend/Obscura/Septicflesh tour!

CHILDREN OF BODOM/DEVIN TOWNSEND TOUR A REALITY — AND OBSCURA AND SEPTICFLESH ARE COMIN’ ALONG, TOO!

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011 at 12:30pm by

It’s been almost a month since Devin Townsend spilled the beans that he was doing a summer tour with Children of Bodom — and now that tour has finally and officially been announced. That’s already a super-sexy package, but Obscura and Septicflesh are on the bill, too, which makes these shows downright unmissable.

And there’s really not much else to say, is there? It’s almost impossible for me to believe that any metal fan doesn’t love at least 75% of this bill.

Here are dates…

SO THE NEW SEPTICFLESH ALBUM ART IS PRETTY WICKED

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011 at 1:00pm by

Septicflesh (SepticFlesh? Septic Flesh? Can someone please clear this shit up once and for all?) have released the album art for their forthcoming release, The Great Mass, and I have very little to say about it, other than “Me want t-shirt now pleeze.” Seriously. Passover is just a couple of weeks away and I don’t have a thing to wear to my sedar.

No Clean Singing tells me that the band’s own Seth Siro Anton made this art. So, bravo, Mr. Anton!

The Great Mass will be out April 19 on Season of Mist.

NEW SEPTICFLESH IS EPICLY EPIC

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 at 12:03am by

Two years ago Anton OyVey and I get pretty drunk and watched Septicflesh rip about forty people a new asshole at the inaugural Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta; I think most of the crowd was out by the main stage watching some trendy beardo band, but I don’t remember who it was. In any case, their set was friggin’ fantastic, as was watching Anton make invisible oranges and drunkenly stumble/air guitar.

Until that point I wasn’t a big Septicflesh fan, but they made me a believer. So I’m stoked to hear their new album, The Great Mass. And “The Vampire from Nazareth,” the new song they’re now giving away for free download here, suggests that I won’t be disappointed.

SEPTICFLESH LIKE PUSSY

Monday, November 23rd, 2009 at 5:00pm by

When we got an e-mail from reader Aaron Doenges claiming that Septicflesh’s song “Communion” was a rip-off of the old Meow Mix cat food jingle, our natural reaction was “What fucking drugs is this dude on?”

Then we listened to the song.

Holy shit.

In other news, I hear Rotting Christ are working on a metal version of the Doublemint Gum song.

CRADLE OF FILTH, SATYRICON AND SEPTICFLESH DISTURB MY PEACEFUL WEST-COAST CITY

Friday, February 6th, 2009 at 4:00pm by

As a man, I’m painfully aware that at any metal show the chances of me being squeezed between two sweaty fat dudes in the front row for 90 minutes is infinitely higher than me being near anything that remotely resembles a female. I say “resembles” because I still remember the time my buddy wrestled a “dude” to the floor of the Commodore Ballroom after they both caught either end of Jimmy Bower’s drumstick. The look on his face when he heard obscenities yelled at him in a screeched, soprano voice ranks pretty highly among my favorite concert memories.

This time the venue was familiar, the metal crowd certainly was not. Oh sure, I already expected the Cradle of Filth fans who can count more zippers, buckles and chains on their outfits than times they’ve heard their parents say they’re proud of them, but beyond platform soles and midnight blue dreadlocks there were many perfectly normal and some perfectly curvy women in attendance. Now, I’ve never really believed that Dani Filth could be a sex symbol for anyone old enough to buy beer, but I guess being the front man of a popular metal band can make even a hideous midget significantly more fuckable. Then again, the gals probably just came out to hear the music.

Oh yeah, you probably want to hear about the music.
