ANALYSIS: ROLLING STONE NAMES 100 GREATEST GUITARISTS

Monday, December 5th, 2011 at 2:30pm by

We at MetalSucks have dealt with the paradoxes involved with conducting a poll to determine great guitar players (read our 25 Best Modern Metal Guitarists poll here)! So we get that in a unweighted vote, the top-ranked axemen may just represent those liked by the largest number of voters; i.e. a dude who we agree is pretty good may score higher than each of our individual favorite dudes.

So when Rolling Stone magazine enlisted a who’s-who of classic rock personalities for their 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time cover story, we prepared for some wacky aberrations. Let’s check out a few of the RS list’s inconsistencies:

THE MELVINS SULLY THE NAME OF THE REMIX WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM THEIR FRIENDS ON CHICKEN SWITCH

The notion of a remix album is a strange one. First of all, what purpose do they serve – to provide intriguing reinterpretations of their catalog, or to throw a bone to fans hungry for a new album? Secondly, are remixes to be judged on their own merits as songs, or do they need to be permanently attached to their point of origin? Third of all, what in the fuck IS a remix, exactly? In the hip-hop community, it’s the same backing track with a slew of different rappers of wildly varying quality contributing new verses along with the original artist. In the pop world, it’s the original song with a throbbing nightclub beat thrown underneath. In the metal world, it’s a weird prospect: it’s either a collection of ambient, noise, or ambient/noise pieces built upon the tiniest shred of the source material, or a rearranging of the original tracks into a violent, messy reimagining (For the latter, see Justin Broadrick’s take on Isis’ “Hym” for how it can be done well, and his take on Pantera’s “Fucking Hostile” to see how it can be done horribly). Needless to say, metal remix albums tend to be geared toward metalheads with noise sympathies or strictly for fans only, if not both. The Melvins’ new remix collection, Chicken Switch, appears to fall into both, but actually falls pretty hard into the latter. Those in search of a worthwhile remix album should probably ignore this one.

NEWSFLASH: HIPSTER NOISEFEST LINEUP DOESN’T SUCK

Typically, I’m not very interested in or even impressed by the majority of the acts that perform at the New York’s annual No Fun Fest, now a three-day event showcasing multiple noisemakers from around the world. On the occasions that I’ve actually attended, it has only been for a single night and typically to catch a single act. Though I read about this year’s lineup some weeks back, I’m still surprised and impressed just how many of these acts are actually exciting me–in my pants.

TOO BIG TO FART

Friday, September 26th, 2008 at 2:41pm by

With the American economy in the toilet, our government is chomping at the bit ready with a dubious bailout that will flush away our tax dollars to save the greedy capitalist pigdogs down on Wall Street. Rewarding the bastards who got fat off the housing and credit bubbles at our expense makes me sick to my possibly ulcerous stomach, but at the end of the day, the American people are too stupid to grasp economic principles. Frankly, youse metalheads are an especially dumb breed, and those of you who actually consider yourselves Republicans should be out in the streets screaming bloody murder over this violation of your so-called principles. But you won’t, because freedom isn’t free. Thankfully, you’ve got excellent taste in music, so here’s your noise news.

SATURDAY SONGS TO SUCK POT TO: SONIC YOUTH – “KOOL THING” and “DIRTY BOOTS”

Saturday, August 30th, 2008 at 5:37pm by

Okay, Sonic Youth is clearly way far from a metal band, but the grandaddies of scratchy alt-rock (and grandmama Kim Gordon) need to be recognized as having a profound impact on the rock n’ roll, noise rock, and even downtown art scenes, with each member of this prolific, 20-plus-years-in-existence band contributing significantly to each aural environs.

And yeah sure, the Youth are prolly on my mind cause I’m about to head over to check this legendary band play at the last-ever show at Brooklyn’s McCarren Pool — aka NYC’s ultimate Summer outdoor venue — which is sadly gearing up to evolve into a full-time real swimming pool (as it once was many years ago)…it’s the last Summer weekend y’all, let’s do this!
