ATLAS MOTH, EX-NACHTMYSTIUM, GATES OF SLUMBER MEMBERS INVITE YOU TO RIDE THE CHROME WAVES

Chrome Waves

If you haven’t heard of Chrome Waves yet we won’t blame you, but now’s the time to listen to correct the error of yours ways by listening to a new track from one of the best new black metal bands I’ve heard in some time. The band features The Atlas Moth vocalist/guitarist Stavros Giannopoulos, ex-Nachtmystium guitarist Jeff Wilson and Gates of Slumber drummer Bob Fouts. The results sound like a delicious stew concocted from the best parts of all three bands, a dark and dreary mix of black metal, Atlas Moth-ian dreary, atmospheric doom and a certain rawness of which Gates of Slumber fans would approve. Here’s new track “That Cursed Armored Train:”

Sweet, right? I look forward to a full-length Chrome Waves album whenever it comes out.

FEATURING MEMBERS OF GWAR, DARKEST HOUR, REVOCATION, INTRONAUT, ABYSMAL DAWN, BRUTAL TRUTH, THE ATLAS MOTH, AND IKILLYA

Every year year, MetalSucks asks musicians from across the vast spectrum of the metalsphere (or, in a few cases, the almost-metalsphere) what their favorite albums of the year have been. Death metallers, thrash metallers, black metallers, stoners, grinders, and djenters alike have graciously contributed lists to MS, and we’ll be running them in groups of nine to ten musicians at a time two to three times a day for the whole week.

After the jump, check out the next group… we hope you enjoy seeing what some of metal’s heaviest hitters were into this year as much as we have!

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW THE ATLAS MOTH’S STAVROS GIANNOPOULOS

The Atlas Moth

The Atlas Moth‘s new record An Ache for the Distance was a pleasant surprise, and it quickly become one of my favorites of the year after I first heard it this Summer. I was bummed I missed their show in NYC earlier this fall, and double-bummed their tour with Batillus and Kowloon Walled City this month didn’t touch the East Coast at all, so I jumped at the opportunity to interview guitarist/vocalist Stavros Giannopoulos. We talked about the new album, Stavros’ love of witch-house music, ignoring the haters and Internet trolls and Stavros’ love of anti-Emmure articles on MetalSucks. Our chat, after the jump.

“CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’” WITH THE ATLAS MOTH

Monday, November 28th, 2011 at 12:00pm by

Metal covers of non-metal songs are a dicey proposition; they can reinvigorate an old classic and take it to new places, but they run the high risk of abysmal failure in the process. There are ironic covers of modern pop-songs, which I think we can all agree are a bad idea, and serious covers of ’80s pop songs, a fun idea at first that’s been beat into the ground in recent years. Not all are doomed from the get-go, though; the best metal covers of non-metal songs are those that strike a balance between the original arrangement and the covering band’s haecceity, or “thisness,” making the new version their own. Misery Signals’ cover of Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them” really blew me away for that very reason, and I’m happy to report that The Atlas Moth’s cover of The Mamas and the Papas’ classic track “California Dreamin’” does the same.

This cover appeared on The Atlas Moth’s 2010 EP The One Amongst the Weed Fields, but like the aforementioned Misery Signals track I somehow missed it when it came out. I’m glad MS reader Kevin Ridge tipped me off to its existence.

The Atlas Moth’s new album An Ache for the Distance is out now and streaming in full on their Bandcamp page. It’s one of 2011′s best, and I promise you’ll dig it.

BATILLUS BATOURUS

Admittedly, I am not the resident doom expert at MetalSucks, but for my money, the genre is not having a terrific year. To wit: I have heard two doom releases which really knocked my beard off: Rwake’s Rest, and Batillus’ Furnace (my review here). I’ve spoken plenty about the former in the past few weeks, but it’s been a minute since I’ve had a good excuse to praise the latter; but now Batiullus have announced a new tour, so I get to come here and tell you once again CHECK THIS BAND OUT.

‘Cause not only is Furnace a fucking heavy, heavy, evil, evil, scary goddamn record, but this band is really a sight to behold in a live setting. My balls quiver with fear just thinking about it, y’know? And most of these tour dates feature at least one other super-awesome band — including The Atlas Moth, Kowloon Walled City, and Yakuza — so the likelihood that they’re going to be fun is, like, 99.9%. Seriously, don’t miss these dates.

Here’s the tour itinerary:

ONE LAST POST ABOUT THE ATLAS MOTH BEFORE THEIR NEW ALBUM COMES OUT TOMORROW

Monday, September 19th, 2011 at 4:00pm by

the atlas moth

Axl and I have both been raving about The Atlas Moth’s new record for a couple of months now (here, here and here), and Grim Kim even named it as of one of her favorites of the first half of 2011, which should tell you just how broad the appeal of An Ache For the Distance is (Having said that, at least one if not several MS commenters are now sure to come out of the woodwork to tell us that our beta taste in metal blows). If you’re not yet hip to what The Atlas Moth are doing, I highly encourage a listen of the three songs from the new record that are posted over at Brooklyn Vegan along with an interview. Each of them is strong their own way, yet they’re all clearly of the same album; dark, powerful, expansive, atmospheric and brutal all at once. There really isn’t any other band in metal right now I can compare them to that would paint an apt description of what they sound like; just go listen.

An Ache For the Distance comes out tomorrow. The Atlas Moth will be touring with Ken Mode in its support; dates after the jump.

THE ATLAS MOTH “ACHE FOR THE DISTANCE,” YOU ACHE TO SEE THEM ON TOUR

Wednesday, August 31st, 2011 at 12:00pm by

The Atlas Moth’s new album, An Ache For The Distance, fucking rules, and it fucking rules hard. Hopefully you already suspected this indisputable fact, based on material from the album that the band has already released; if not, kindly redirect your browser to Brooklyn Vegan right now and check out the newly-unveiled title track form the album.

Bonus: Brooklyn Vegan included an new interview with the band, which is pretty interesting (they cite Deftones as a big influence, which is kinda surprising, but kinda not I guess), so you get some knowledge with your awesome new metal.

Check that shit out right here. The band is also starting a tour with KEN Mode at the end of September; get dates after the jump.

FEELING THE FUCKING WRATH FOR THE ATLAS MOTH

The Fucking Wrath

Yesterday was a big day for new music; amidst new tracks from Hull, Textures, Landmine Marathon and Skeletonwitch we had an embarrassment of riches. Hopefully you can forgive us for missing a couple of important new debuts from The Fucking Wrath and The Atlas Moth, as we’re back today to right our wrongs. Just because we didn’t get to these yesterday doesn’t mean we think they’re less important; you need to listen to these two new tracks!

VAN MOSH: GRIM KIM’S COC/CLUTCH TOUR PLAYLIST

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011 at 2:30pm by

There are many awesome things about touring. You get to see new places, make new friends, hang with old ones, get free booze (sometimes), develop sweet guns from lugging gear around (Seriously, you should see my biceps. I’m straight-up Amazonian by this point.), make a little money (sometimes) and, if you’re lucky, get to listen to bands you love play every night (or, barring that, make fun of the shitty opening bands who never got the memo that 1999 is dead and gone, and that ripping off Pantera isn’t nearly as great an idea as it sounded when they came up with it in their PBR-scented basements).

One of the things that sucks most about touring, though, is that you almost never have a moment to yourself. You have free time, sure, but you’re generally always in or around the company of your bandmates, road crew, or just, like, dudes. It’s tough to get a moment alone to sit down and write, but I always do my best to sneak off and get shit done. That being said, it’s been more hectic that usual this time around, and instead of gushing at length about the latest EP from Invidious or mourning the sold-out status of the live Blasphemophagher/Diocletian tape, I’m going to give you guys a peek into what I’ve been jamming these past few weeks on the road with Corrosion of Conformity and Clutch. Some songs are the result of Woody Weatherman’s DJing bouts, some are favorites from the sets I see every night, some remind me of home/loved ones, and some are just fucking rad.

NEW ATLAS MOTH IS A SIGN OF BIG THINGS TO COME (WARNING: NSFW ALBUM COVER)

Monday, July 25th, 2011 at 4:00pm by

The-Atlas-Moth-An-Ache-For-The-DistanceThe Atlas Moth just keep getting better and better; their 2009 debut album A Glorified Piece of Blue Sky was impressive enough, but it’s the myriad opportunities I’ve had to see this band relentlessly pound the eastern U.S. with their enveloping live assault that’s really turned me into a fan.

Having now graduated from the the minor leagues of Candlelight to big-boy label Profound Lore for their sophomore album, The Atlas Moth have released the first preview of what’s in store on An Ache For The Distance, out September 20th, in the form of the new song “Coffin Varnish,” streaming at Stereogum. The new song isn’t doing anything to dissuade me from that feeling bubbling inside me that The Atlas Moth are one of the most exciting up-and-coming bands in all of metal; their blend of sludge, atmospherics and melody hit a certain sweet spot that’s sure to appeal to all sorts of metalheads (including this one). Expect to see positive press oozing out of all corners of the metalsphere in the coming months, and look for An Ache For the Distance to make a few appearances on notable year-end lists. Calling it now!

All the accolades The Atlas Moth will receive are probably deserved, of course. Find out for yourself what all the fuss is about by listening to “Coffin Varnish” at Stereogum.

NECROLUST: GRIM KIM GIVES YOU ROADBURN 2011

Thursday, April 21st, 2011 at 2:40pm by

Hey dudes and ladies, sorry I haven’t been posting much this month. I’ve been travelingeven more than usual, and haven’t had much time to sit down and write down much of anything besides flight confirmation numbers and directions to wherever I happen to be sleeping any given evening. Cheers once again to those of you who went out and soaked up the riff-tastic metal circus that was Metalliance (especially those wonderful souls who came up to hang out or bought me a drink!), and mad love to everyone who survived that tour, especially the eternal road dogs in The Atlas Moth and Howl and my tour family on the Saint Vitus/Crowbar bus.

As soon as that madness ended, I flew over to Ireland to stay with my boyfriend J. for a couple days and get ready for my next adventure: reprising my now-yearly pilgrimage to the mighty Roadburn festival in Tilburg, Netherlands. He and I met there last year (he was playing, I was covering, the rest is history) so it was due to be special for more than the usual reasons, which are pretty fucking good reasons in and of themselves!

Roadburn is the best heavy music festival in the world, hands down. A bold statement, sure, but anyone who’s ever played, worked, or attended the event will agree with me. Yeah, the lineups are always amazing, and yes, the venues – the 013, which is separated into the Main Room, Green Room, and Bat Cave, and the Midi Theatre — are killer. The separate building for merchandise, vinyl distros, and movie screenings doesn’t hurt, nor does the charming ambiance of Tilburg itself.

The real heart and soul of this festival comes from outside, though; from the big-hearted organizers Walter and Jurgen, from the efforts of Roadburn public relations guru Yvonne (without whom the whole damn thing would have fallen apart), and from the thousands of fans and bands that have come together, united by an overwhelming sense of community and goodwill. Everyone at Roadburn is absolutely 100% thrilled to be exactly where they are. There is a reason that this year’s edition sold out – sold OUT – in fifteen minutes, and it’s not just because Swans, Godflesh, Winter, and Sunn 0))) were playing (though that can’t have hurt, either). I made it to my first Roadburn in 2009, and have made it a point to come backevery year since – I’ve heard the same pledge from a lot of first-timers, and I know a few people that are already saving pennies for next year!

This year’s lineup was insane (as always). To give you an idea, I wanted to be sure to catch Alcest, Year of No Light, Acid King, Winterfylleth, Zoroaster, Wovenhand, Naam, Blood Ceremony, Pentagram, Today is the Day, Cough, Godflesh, In Solitude, Wardruna, Soilent Green, Count Raven, Earth, Place of Skulls, Winter, Trap Them, Sabbath Assembly, Summon the Crows, Corrosion of Conformity, Menace Ruine, Sunn 0))), Hooded Menace, Grave Miasma, Scorn, Candlemass (performing Epicus Doomicus Metallicus in its entirety!), Black Math Horseman, Master Musicians of Bukkake, Weedeater, Rwake, Ludicra, Evoken, Ramesses, Shrinebuilder, Yakuza, The Gates of Slumber, Swans, Ufomammut, Blood Farmers, Coffins, Dead Meadow, and Sourvein … and that’s just me. There were plenty of other bands that I either had seen many times, was unfamiliar with, or just didn’t want to see (which is rare at Roadburn, but there’s a first time for everything).

Of course, since it’s a massive festival full of people from all over the world, a lot of whom I love dearly, I managed to miss tons of bands, but I’m okay with it. I’ll see most of them again, and Roadburn isn’t totally about the music. It’s about the experience, man.

Here are a few highlights from this year; third time’s the charm!

IF ONLY WE COULD FOLLOW THEM THERE: THE ATLAS MOTH GO FORTH AMONGST THE WEED FIELDS

Thursday, August 26th, 2010 at 3:20pm by

The Atlas Moth

Chicago dark-n’-crusty sludge/doomsters The Atlas Moth, a really good band I’ve slowly gotten hip to over the past couple of years, are releasing a digital-only covers EP this fall that promises to be pretty darn sweet. Titled The One Amongst the Weed Fields, it contains darkened renditions of “California Dreamin’” (The Mamas & The Papas), “Fearless” (Pink Floyd), “Golden” (Failure), and “Five to One” (The Doors). That Failure cover is currently streaming over at Stereogum, so you should definitely check that out, but the one I’m most excited to hear is “Fearless.” Long-time readers of this site should know I’m a huge Floyd freak, and I’ve always thought “Fearless” was ripe for a metal re-interpretation.

FINALLY A NACHTMYSTIUM HEADLINE TOUR!

Thursday, July 15th, 2010 at 10:30am by

nachtmystium

[UPDATE: Dates have now been posted at Stereogum!]

Feels like we’ve been waiting forever for a Nachtmystium headline tour; in my recollection there wasn’t one for the Assassins: Black Meddle Part I album cycle, and as you all [should] know Blake Judd and the crew have released another excellent album since then. Maybe there was a headline run for Assassins but I couldn’t go or something… which makes this new opportunity even sweeter.

HEAVY METAL ROAD TRIP, DAY 8: DAY THREE OF SXSW + EPIC BBQ

Thursday, April 1st, 2010 at 5:00pm by

heavy metal road trip

In which we ate epic BBQ and saw an epic headline set by Muse…

Every year at SXSW I make time for a trip down to the Salt Lick. It’s never easy; at 45 minutes outside the city limits it turns into a 3+ hour adventure, and the tricky part is getting a ride. Thankfully this year the dudes in East of the Wall and Goes Cube hooked it up big time and by noon me, Kip, and Rob from Metal Injection were on our way to Driftwood.

I know there are other great BBQ places, even inside Austin itself, but the Salt Lick is so fucking good I just can’t NOT go there. By the time we rolled up to the Salt Lick parking lot with Goes Cube, East of the Wall were ready and waiting with a case of beer (Salt Lick is BYOB). We quickly sucked down the two joints we’d rolled that morning and put our names on the list, and within 20 minutes we were sitting at a table ready to gorge ourselves on meat.

Salt Lick offers “all you can eat” meat platters for $15 per person. They include brisket, ribs and sausage, and they’ll just keep bringing you more platters until you say stop. Stoned, drunk and jubilated we tore into the meat as soon as our waiter set it down on the table. For some reason the question “Another round of meat, guys?” elicited constant laughs… there’s something about the concept of being able to order rounds of meat that tickled us silly.
