SATURDAY SONGS TO GET SPOOKED TO

Saturday, June 25th, 2011 at 2:57pm by

I have a friend who swears that the basement of her workplace is haunted by a g-g-g-g-ghost… She also mentioned an affinity for reality shows about paranormal activity. So naturally I asked her if the ghost at her workplace came before she started watching said reality shows or vice versa. What do you think her answer was?

My humble apologies to the apparition-believers among us — I don’t mean to sound so skeptical. As a matter of fact, I suspect there are plenty of cosmic/extrasensory phenomena I have faith in that many of you might scoff at.

Destiny?

Fate?

G-d?

Unicornzzz?

MS Mansion Monkeys????

(That last one is undeniably real)

In any case, it’s hard not to appreciate m-m-m-m-music about g-g-g-g-ghosts, right?  Let’s get our spook on after ze jump…

NATIVE’S ARMS ARE SNAKES

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 at 10:01am by

native - wrestling movesI’m patting myself on the back today. I opened a link from a trusted publicist about a band called Native, and after pressing play the first thing I thought was “Gee, this drummer sounds a lot like These Arms Are Snakes’ Chris Common.” And while Chris Common is unfortunately not the drummer for Native, when I scrolled down I discovered that Chris Common produced the fucking record. Go me! I rule. But Chris Common rules even more than I do… dude’s one of the buttery-est, smoothest finesse drummers on the planet. Watching him play live is like watching two lovers make sweet, sweet romantic love.

I always dig when musicians take on production projects reminiscent of their own bands (or in this case former band). It’s a stamp of approval but it’s also a sign that if you like band X you’re very very likely to enjoy band Y too.

Oh, so, Native. You can stream their entire record Wrestling Moves on their BandCamp page and buy it for only $6.99. The drumming isn’t the only thing that reminds me of These Arms are Snakes; fans of that band will definitely dig Native too.

EXCLUSIVE METALSUCKS PREMIER: DAUGHTERS – “THE THEATRE GOER”

Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 1:00pm by

daughters - s/t

Dilapidated warehouse, makeshift stage, loud-as-fuck sound system, cheap booze and weed smoke everywhere, hundreds of sweaty, crazy motherfuckers going insane as the band-members gyrate about on stage and come into the audience, because really there’s barely any separation between stage and floor. That’s what I want it to be like the first time I see post-punk / metal explosion outfit Daughters live (yes, I know they’ve been around for years). Based on this here new track “The Theatre Goer” I can tell that these dudes put on really fucking intense shows, and with the sudden absence of These Arms are Snakes in all of our lives I really need a band to fill that void.

Daughters comes out on March 9th via Hydra Head. Pre-order it here.

THESE ARMS ARE NO LONGER SNAKES :( :( :(

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010 at 1:15pm by

these arms are snakesAccording to an official press release from These Arms Are Snakes’ record label Suicide Squeeze, the Seattle based four-piece post-metallers have broken up:

“It’s with a heavy heart we tell you that These Arms Are Snakes is no more. It’s been a great run and we’d like to send out a very hearty “Thank You” to everyone that we’ve worked with or anyone that we’ve toured with; anyone that lent us a floor, towed our van and/or trailer, lent a van, given us a listen, downloaded our records prior to their coming out, bought our shit, or asked us where our band name came from; everyone who cooked us food, made habanero-infused tequila, had a safety meeting with us, let Steve gyrate all over you, had to live with any of us, made us pay shitloads of money to get off your punk label, got us into LOST, found Steve drunkenly wandering the streets of Tokyo alone, played Madlibs in the van (plural nouns), lost money promoting one of our shows, took Chris to the hospital, put up with our drunken sorry asses, got into a fight with us, etc. etc.”

This band could not have been possible without all of you. We sincerely thank you.

Much love,

TAAS 2002 – 2009

Well, umm… this sucks. I’ve never been a huge fan of any one These Arms are Snakes record, but in a live setting the band absolutely smokes. Like, makes other bands look like absolute amateurs they are [were] so fucking good. These Arms Are Snakes ripping first-night performance was a highlight of my 2009 SXSW festival, and I had the privilege of seeing them again this Fall in a Bushwick loft.

The band hasn’t given any reasons for their breakup, but I suppose it’s some combination of the usual suspects… creative differences, dudes wanting to move on and do other things, dudes getting tired of the touring lifestyle, dudes wanting to settle down, dudes getting tired of smelling each others’ farts, dudes hating each other’s guts… etc. In the immediate future I suppose this means bassist Brian Cook will have more time to devote to Russian Circles who seem to be doing quite well for themselves lately (nearly packed NYC’s Bowery Ballroom last month). I’m not aware if guitarist Ryan Frederiksen is involved with other projects, but the dude can play. And as for snake-like frontman Steve Snere and uber-finesse drummer Chris Common… lord oh lord would it be an incredible waste of talent if those dudes didn’t join other bands.

So why the fuck were they called These Arms Are Snakes anyway? R.I.P.

QUICKIE REVIEW OF AN UNSIGNED BAND: SALVADOR

Monday, January 11th, 2010 at 3:00pm by

From time to time, new MetalSucks editorial intern Dave Mustein will be doing some short reviews of unsigned and lesser-known bands for us. We hope you enjoy…

AFront

The MS Mansion recently received a an album entitled Cleansed Through Fire and Blood from a Portland, Oregon band called Salvador. Although I would expect a band with that moniker to play Spanish-themed deathcore or something, Salvador actually plays some excellent stoner rock/metal à la sludgier Baroness and early-to-middle Mastodon.

IN WHICH WE BOUGHT A PENIS

Friday, November 6th, 2009 at 5:00pm by

Holy shit. I wasn’t even out that late last night, but for some reason I am just so tired today that it feels like nothing is really happening. Am I really typing this? Did I really write something positive about Zakk Wylde? Can I please just go to sleep now? I’m just gonna go to sleep now.

Before I do, here’s some things that happened this week:

Alright, seriously, night-night time for Axl. I think Gary Suarez is going to the NYC Vader gig tomorrow; if anyone sees him there, give him a dead arm for me.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES / THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES BASSIST BRIAN COOK: THE METALSUCKS INTERVIEW

Tuesday, November 3rd, 2009 at 2:30pm by

brian cookInstru-metallers Russian Circles’ new album Geneva is out now. Even Axl, who usually doesn’t get into all of the same instrumental / trippy / wank stuff that I do, is enjoying the album and described it as “really cinematic.” If you’ve yet to experience this amazing band, be sure to listen to a few tracks on their MySpace page and catch them on their current tour with Young Widows and Coliseum.

Current These Arms Are Snakes / ex-Botch bassist Brian Cook recently became a full-time member of Russian Circles after having recorded and toured with them on their last record Station. I recently emailed Brian a batch of questions about joining the band, recording the new album, balancing the workload between all of his projects, and what the future holds for Russian Circles, to which he was more than happy to respond in detail. My questions, his answers… after the jump.

NEW MUSIC FROM THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009 at 12:00pm by

these arms are snakes

In celebration of their upcoming tour — or perhaps just because they felt like it — Seattle post-metallers These Arms are Snakes have released a new digital single called “Washburn,” streaming exclusively at Spinner.com. The song, originally half of a super-limited edition split 7″ with All the Saints, is exactly what we’ve all come to expect from TAAS: jarring rhythms, angular dissonance, and intricate post-metal riffs in a raw, punk package.

Monsieurs Rosenberg, Wingerschmidt and myself are all going to attend the insanity that is a TAAS show on September 25th at a grimy, DIY Brooklyn venue called “Shea Stadium” (!!). That show will undoubtedly blow the frickin’ pants off the following night’s hang at the relatively pedestrian (but still awesome) Mercury Lounge in Manhattan… it’s gonna be “batshit crazy,” in the words of Mr. Wingerschmidt.

Full list of tour dates after the jump.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES RUSH IN CIRCLES AROUND MY HEAD ON NEW TRACK

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009 at 1:00pm by

russian circles“Russian Circles” is like an onomatopoeia of band names; I have no idea what a Russian Circle is, but I do know that if the band name is spoken — not written — it’s accurate as fuck. Listen to any Russian Circles song and tell me their music doesn’t sound just like circles that are rushing, spiraling and spinning (hint: it helps if you’re stoned). Their excellent 2008 release Station was one of my favorite instru-metal releases of that year, and judging from the new track “Malko,” their new record Geneva (October 20th, Suicide Squeeze) will bring more of the same rushing, circling goodness.

Noise/post-rock fans, take note: ex-Botch, current-These Arms Are Snakes bass player Brian Cook is now a permanent member of Russian Circles. Yeah!

Listen to “Malko,” courtesy of The Fader, below:

Russian Circles – “Malko”

Catch the band on tour with Young Widows and Red Sparowes this fall. Dates after the jump.

THESE ARMS ARE READY TO SEE THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES LIVE AGAIN

Thursday, August 6th, 2009 at 11:30am by

“You may think you know what a These Arms Are Snakes live show looks and sounds like… But if you’ve never seen them, I can guarantee that you have no idea.  Broken ribs, black eyes, self-induced concussions, and that is on a tame night!  Whether this is the first or the fiftieth time you have seen the band play, it’s safe to say that your face WILL BE melted by awesome!”

So begins the press release announcing this fall’s These Arms Are Snakes U.S. tour, and I really couldn’t've summed it up any better myself. Kip W. and I got pummelled by TAAS on Night 1 of this year’s SXSW, and having somehow never seen this amazing band live before we had no idea what we were in for. Vocalist Steve Snere hung from the rafters and drummer Chris Common is one of the most buttery smooth, finesse-style drummers I’ve ever seen in my life; I was transfixed. Don’t miss this one, kids!

Here’s the band performing “Abracadabra” live in 2007. Tour dates after the jump.

NARROWS GO TO GREAT LENGTHS ON NEW DISTANCES

Monday, June 15th, 2009 at 3:15pm by

The name Dave Verellen should mean something to anyone who laments the 2002 breakup of Botch, the esteemed hardcore act whose legacy has made it more popular now than when it was an active unit. As the voice of that group, Verellen deserves partial credit – and perhaps a little blame – for the glut of roaring metalcore vocalists that came in his wake. From a publicity perspective, this influence strengthens the already impressive pedigree of Narrows, his latest band featuring members of noteworthy heavy ensembles such as Unbroken and These Arms Are Snakes. As evidenced by its full-length debut New Distances, the group refuses to rest on its proverbial laurels and instead goes above and beyond its participants’ discographies, yielding something truly exceptional.

THESE ARMS WILL FUCK YOU UP

Monday, March 23rd, 2009 at 10:00am by

I couldn’t find any footage of These Arms are Snakes performing live that accurately captured the spectacle I witnessed first-hand on Wednesday, but this video for “Horse Girl” has some shots of the band rocking out so it’ll have to do for now. While I can see many of our readers not being able to get into this band because of the higher punk to metal ratio, just trust me when I say that I was the same until I saw them live; and you will be too. TAAS still have some live dates in the Western U.S. on their current tour, so if you live out that way make absolutely sure you go see them.

THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES “RED LINE SEASON”: AN ACID TRIP OF A VIDEO

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008 at 12:50pm by

These Arms Are Snakes just released a video for the song “Red Line Season” from their Suicide Squeeze Records release Tail Swallower and Dove. The Artificial Army-directed clip is a trippy mothafuckin experience. Kinda reminds me of that time Axl and I drove from New York to Los Angeles with an ounce of mushrooms, got sidetracked in El Paso at a roadside diner-turned-whorehouse, went on a 48-hour bender with the dudes from Lake Bukkake and woke up in a jail cell next to some dude named Biff. Oh wait… I’ve never even been to El paso? Never met the mysterious geniuses of Lake Bukkake? None of that even happened? Oh yeah…. right. Carry on.

THESE ARMS ARE AWESOME

Monday, October 20th, 2008 at 4:00pm by

These Arms are Snakes are a band that I only became conscious of in one of those classic concert-going situations: “Hey, who’s opening for [headlining band]? Who the fuck is that?” These situations are always filled with potential goodness, because ultimately an opening band that you’ve never heard of simply cannot ruin the concert for you short of lighting the venue on fire or boob-slapping your girlfriend; you’re there to see the headliner, and no matter how crappy the support is, there’s usually a bar that’s more deserving of your 45 minutes of attention. On the other hand, if the band is respectable, it’s a bonus to what was hopefully going to be a sweet show anyway.

Luckily for me, TAAS was in the latter category and put on a spectacular live show.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH RUSSIAN CIRCLES’ DAVE TURNCRANTZ

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008 at 1:04pm by

Russian Circles - Dave Turncranz

A few weeks ago, the Chicago-based rising instrumental metal band Russian Circles played at New York City’s Mercury Lounge as part of a short tour to whet the appetite of the masses for the release of their new record Station, out May 6th on Suicide Squeeze Records. Russian Circles were nothing short of fantastic, their aggressive brand of stoney metal punctuated by Floydian guitar work, ethereal soundscapes and dynamic drumming. Before the show, MetalSucks had the opportunity to sit down with Russian Circles’ drummer Dave Turncrantz to ask him about the new record, working with producer Mat Bayles (Mastodon, Botch, Vendetta Red, Norma Jean) the band’s formation and musical evolution, and their plans for the future. The full chat transcript after the jump.

CINEMETAL: BOTCH, “SAINT MATTHEW RETURNS TO THE WOMB”

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007 at 12:00pm by

In my ongoing quest to talk about bands who have thus far been given the shaft by MetalSucks, here’s the video to a track from Botch’s seminal album, We Are the Romans. Botch’s members went on to form a bunch of other good bands after they broke up in ’02, including These Arms are Snakes, which, if memory serves, is one of Kip Wingerschmidt’s very favorite groups.

In any case, like most really awesome acts that disbanded, I have a hard time believing that Botch won’t someday sully their legacy with a reunion tour. Until that day…
