FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY: I CAN’T THINK OF A CLEVER WAY TO FIT “THE CONQUEROR” INTO THIS HEADLINE!

Thursday, May 19th, 2011 at 11:30am by

But that’s the name of the band’s new song — “The Conqueror.” It’s now streaming on Fit for an Autopsy’s Facebook page, assuming you’re willing to click the “like” button, which you should be, ’cause this band is br00tal, and you like br00tal things.

In case you didn’t read about Fit for an Autopsy the last time I wrote about them, they’re a new band that features former Through the Eyes of the Dead vocalist Nate Johnson, as well as guitarist Will Putney, who has already produced such killer records as The Human Abstract’s Digital Veil. Their debut album, The Process of Human Extermination (cover art above) is coming out June 21 on Black Market Activities, and features guest appearances from The Red Chord’s Guy Kozowyk, Tim Williams of Vision of Disorder/Bloodsimple fame, Full Blown Chaos’ Ray Mazzola, and The Human Abstract’s Travis Richter.

In other words, this is a record to which attention must be paid.

So headbang here, then come back and let us know what you think. My guess is that about half of you will accuse the band of playing generic deathcore, and the other half of you have ears.

THE BEST METAL ALBUMS OF 2010, AS CHOSEN BY METAL MUSICIANS THEMSELVES — PART II

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010 at 5:00pm by

FEATURING MEMBERS OF FIREWIND, THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD, TESSERACT, BISON B.C., BONDED BY BLOOD, HAARP, THE UNGUIDED, AND ANNEX THEORY

For 2010, we decided to do something special as part of our regular end-of-year festivities here at MetalSucks — namely, ask musicians from across the vast spectrum of the metalsphere (or, in a few cases, the almost-metalsphere) what their favorite albums of the year were. Death metallers, thrash metallers, black metallers, stoners, grinders, and djenters alike graciously contributed lists to MS, and we’ll be running them in groups of ten to eleven musicians at a time twice a day for the rest of the week.

After the jump, check out the second group… we hope you enjoy seeing what some of metal’s heaviest hitters were into this year as much as we have!

(And please note that these are musicians and that they, um, have a lot on their minds. So some of ‘em named albums that actually came out last year. Please don’t freak out.)

BLACK MARKET ACTIVITIES IS FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY

Friday, December 3rd, 2010 at 12:30pm by

The latest sign for Guy Kozowyk’s Black Market Activities label is New Jersey’s Fit for an Autopsy. The band is notable for several reasons (besides the fact that they’re good, I mean), namely:

  • They are that rarest of breeds — a good deathcore band. After seeing them live last year, our own Sammy O’Hagar said that “the band’s brutal, glowering take on [deathcore] reminded one of the squandered potential of the genre,” noting that “hardcore grooves and swagger, when incorporated correctly, blend quite well with death metal.” Sammy also complimented front man Nate Johnson, asserting that Johnson’s “serrated vocals provided the oomph needed to put the band over the top.” Oceano: take note.

TOO MANY HUMANS: THE LAST FELONY MAY BE THE FRENCH CANADIAN THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 at 3:00pm by

Quebec quintet The Last Felony sound so much like Through the Eyes of the Dead that if you had told me that their new album, Too Many Humans, was, in fact, Through the Eyes of the Dead, I might very well have believed it. This fact highlights Too Many Humans‘ greatest strength, as well as its greatest weakness: it rocks really hard, and it’s completely lacking in originality.

AWESOME DEATH METAL TOUR ALERT! AWESOME DEATH METAL TOUR ALERT!

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010 at 9:40am by

There’s really almost nothing to say about a tour headlined by Suffocation and featuring The Faceless, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Decrepit Birth, and Fleshgod Apocalypse, other than, “Where can I buy a ticket?” Kind of amazingly, I still haven’t seen TTEOTD live yet, and I’m not even sure that Fleshgod Apocalypse, who are Eye-talian, have ever played North America before; but I can vouch that the other three bands all crush testicles live, and based on how much I enjoy their recordings, I’d like to believe that the other two bands will as well.

This is pretty much a perfect line-up. No dates have been announced yet, but you should fall to your knees and pray that the tour is coming to your town.

More as we get it.

THOUGHTS ON THE 2010 THRASH & BURN TOUR LINEUP

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010 at 11:00am by

thrash and burn 2010

The Summer metal tour market for 2010 is crowded, yo.We’ve got the older and mainstream metal-skewed Rockstar Mayhem Fest (Korn, Zombie, 5FDP, Atreyu, Winds of Plague, Hatebreed) the Rockstar-branded radio metal “Uproar” Tour sure to be a hit in Red States (Disturbed, A7X, Hellyeah), the Christian, metalcore and Christian metalcore fest known as The Cool Tour (As I Lay Dying, Underoath, War of Ages, Blessthefall, and uh… BTBAM) and the sexiest of all sex kittens, Summer Slaughter (Decapitated, The Faceless, All Shall Perish, The Red Chord, other cool bands). And, if you count 6 dates as a “tour” you’ve got Ozzfest, which does a surprisingly good job of combining the old (Ozzy, Motley Crue, Rob Halford, BLS) with the new/cool (Kingdom of Sorrow, Skeletonwitch, Goatwhore, Saviours).

So with all that on our plates, we’ve got yet another tour coming down the pipe this summer? As you’ve no doubt gathered from this article’s headline and image, yes, indeed we do.

My thoughts on the 2010 Thrash & Burn lineup — and dates — after the jump.

THE TONY DANZA TAP DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA JOINS “THE UNION”

Thursday, April 1st, 2010 at 4:30pm by

I resisted checking out The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza for the longest time, a decision which was based purely on their name. This was poor judgment on my part – this band is just swell! Which just goes to prove, you can’t judge a book by its cover. Unless that cover belongs to Kamelot.

ANYWAY, I mention this ’cause TTDTDE (holy shit, even typing their initials takes a fucking hour) are streaming a new song, “The Union,” on their MySpace page. It’s a discordant mind-melter, which should come as no great shock. But, seriously, if I ever listened to it drunk, I think I might puke. This is the aural equivalent of one of those times when you’ve had a few (or way) too many, and even when you close your eyes, the darkness spins.

“The Union” will be on TTDTDE’s latest, Danza III: The Series Of Unfortunate Events, which comes out July 6 on Guy Kozowyk’s Black Market Activities label. You can also stream the band’s cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” right here at MetalSucks! And don’t forget that they’ll be on the MS-sponsored Road to MetalFest Tour with Through the Eyes of the Dead, Impending Doom, Arsonists Get All the Girls, and Chelsea Grin. Get dates here.

METALSUCKS & MERCH CONNECTION PROUDLY PRESENT THE ROAD TO METALFEST TOUR WITH THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD AND IMPENDING DOOM FEATURING ARSONISTS GET ALL THE GIRLS, THE TONY DANZA TAP DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA, AND CHELSEA GRIN

Monday, February 22nd, 2010 at 4:00pm by

BBBBBRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOTTTTAAAAAAALLLLL!!!

That’s really the only way to describe the Road to Metalfest tour, which will be co-headlined by Impending Doom and Through the Eyes of the Dead, with support coming from Arsonists Get All the Girls, The Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza, and Chelsea Grin. This are five bands that don’t know the meaning of the words “tread lightly.” They might as well have called this the “FUCK MELODY RIGHT IN THE EAR” tour. You know who won’t be going to this tour? Pussies. You’re not a pussy… are you?

We’re really stoked to be a part of this one. Get dates after the jump!

DROP ACID AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND THE CONCEPT BEHIND THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD’S SKEPSIS

Thursday, February 11th, 2010 at 3:00pm by

One bummer about digital advance albums: they don’t come with lyrics, which means you can either understand what the vocalist is saying, or you can’t. Case in point: Through the Eyes of the Dead’s excellent new album, Skepsis (read my review here). I can’t really understand what Danny Rodriguez is screaming most of the time, so I never even took the lyrics into account when writing my review. I did bother to look up the definition of the word “skepsis,” but even that was only gonna tell me so much about what Rodriguez (and the rest of the band?) had in mind in terms of lyrical themes.

Luckily for me, Rodriguez (at least, I’m assuming it’s Rodriguez) has now posted a MySpace blog outlining the concept of the record. Check it out:

SKEPSIS: THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD FANS CAN RELAX!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010 at 9:52am by

If you’re a fan of Through the Eyes of the Dead – and I don’t mind telling you that I am – you were probably deeply worried about Skepsis, the band’s first album in more than two years. Hell, it’s 3/5ths of a different band now than it was when 2007′s excellent Malice was released! But you can relax: the album, which comes out today on Prosthetic, is a direct sequel to that record, both in style and quality.

AOL STREAMING NEW ALBUMS FROM THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD AND CHARRED WALLS OF THE DAMNED

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 at 10:01am by

Next week will bring the release of two excellent new metal albums – Through the Eyes of the Dead’s Skepsis (Prosthetic) and Charred Walls of the Damned’s self-titled debut (Metal Blade). But AOL is now streaming both albums in full! Hoo-ray!

In case you don’t know, Charred Walls of the Damned is the new supergroup from legendary drummer/professional prank caller Richard Christy. As you’d expect for any project featuring “Ripper” Owens on vocals, it’s a pretty classic-sounding project. But with these players involved, well… let’s just say they actually pulled it off.

TTEOTD meanwhile, fall sqaurely into The Black Dahlia Murder’s camp: they’re not at all reinventing the wheel, just trying to be the best possible death metal band they can be. Skepsis is the natural next step from 2007′s Malice, and it’s great to see that all the line-up changes haven’t had any noticeably negative effect on the band.

Listen to Skepsis here and Charred Walls… here. They’re both definitely worth check out.

PROSTHETIC RECORDS TAKES RAZOR & TIE TO COURT

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010 at 10:00am by

Prosthetic Records, home to such artists as Gojira, Skeletonwitch, The Acacia Strain, and Through the Eyes of the Dead, has filed suit against Razor & Tie, Billboard reports. I don’t wanna re-type or misinterpret any of the legalese, so I’m just gonna cut and paste the nitty gritty from Billboard:

ALBUMS THAT WILL FUCK YOUR FACE OFF IN 2010: THE BEST OF THE REST

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010 at 4:30pm by

Black Breath – TBD (Southern Lord/Hot Mass)

The band released the 12″ debut EP, Razor To Oblivion, on their own awhile back, but Southern Lord deftly scooped up the crusty hardcore/metal quintet and re-released Razor on CD with news that the debut full-length would hit streets early in 2010. If this thing is soaked in beer, angst, and riffs as much as the four-track debut was, you might be able to put away those Municipal Waste records and toss in Black Breath at that kegger.

THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD UNVEIL THEIR “MANIFEST”

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 at 4:00pm by

SKEPSIS

I’ve been worried about the fate of Through the Eyes of the Dead for some time now; they’ve gone through a butt load of line-up changes since the release of their last album, 2007′s killer Malice, including the loss of vocalist Nate Johnson, who I personally thought was a vast improvement over his predecessor, Anthony Gunnells.

But now the band finally have a new album coming out, entitled Skepsis, and they’ve unveiled a track, “The Manifest” on their MySpace page. And it turns out I had no reason to be worried at all.

“MANIFEST”: OUR FIRST TASTE OF NEW THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD MUSIC

Monday, October 12th, 2009 at 12:00pm by

There’s a lot of curiosity floating around with regards to Through the Eyes of the Dead’s new album, Skepsis. I loved their last release, Malice, but there have been quite a few line-up changes since then, and as a fan you’re never quite sure what that will do for a band’s sound.

But this bootleg footage of a new song, “Manifest,” is encouraging. The quality ain’t perfect, but it ain’t bad, and the song sounds like a rhino-stampede of heaviness. It has a good hook, too. This bodes well for the rest of the album.

Skepsis will come out next year (in January, maybe?) on Prosthetic.

THE SKEPSIS OF THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD

Monday, September 21st, 2009 at 3:59pm by

SKEPSIS

I haven’t done much posting today. I’m having a shitty day, alright? One of those days when useless bullshit brought upon you by pathetic, ignorant low lives ends up eating all your time. This is one of these days where everyone in my immediate vicinity is lucky I don’t own a gun, or you’d all be watching me on the news later tonight as I was dragged away for offing a room full of people.

So THANK FUCKING FUCK for some good news: Through the Eyes of the Dead have finally announced a title. It’s called Skepsis, which is a (I’m assuming deliberate) misspelling of the word “scepsis.” Look it up, motherfuckers.

There’s still no release date, but the cover art, which you see above, is by the always awesome Paul Romano.

Meanwhile, TTEOTD are about to hit the road with Despised Icon. Get dates here.

THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD AIN’T DEAD YET

Thursday, July 9th, 2009 at 11:00am by

I have kind of a love/hate relationship with Twitter, but I have to admit, it’s become a useful source of information.

So. Through the Eyes of the Dead, whose 2007 album Malice was actually capable of killing small animals, have suffered through some fairly heavy-duty line-up changes since that album’s release (including going through two vocalists inside of a year). The band endures, though, and are currently recording a new album. Meanwhile, they tweeted/twittered/twatted/twote/whatever that they’re playing four dates in August. I highly recommend you go check ‘em out.

Dates are after the jump. In the meantime, here’s the band’s video for “Failure in the Flesh.” The Romero-esque goodness was directed by David Brodsky.

THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD ARE FALLING APART

Monday, March 24th, 2008 at 10:51am by

tteotd.jpg
I have nothing but nice things to say about Through the Eyes of the Dead’s latest release, last year’s Malice (read my review here), which is why I wanna make it clear that the above headline is not meant to be taken in the usual MetalSucksian snarky tone. In fact, I was really, really saddened when Lambgoat reported over the weekend that guitarist Richard Turbeville had quit the band to focus on another group, From Graves of Valor:

“It was nothing personal against any of those guys and I don’t hate them. I just have too many other things going on in my life right now that are more important to me. Plus musically, I feel that I fit in much better playing in Graves of Valor. Me and those dudes go way back and I feel like everything is more solid playing with them. Anyways, so that’s what I chose to do.”

The band is already on their third singer in a year and may or may not have also lost their second drummer in under six months. In fact, the photo above you in no way, shape or form reflects the band’s current line-up, such as it is.

Man, I fuckin’ love this band and still haven’t gotten to see them live; they are definitely one of the better young death metal bands out there. I hope they can get past their line-up woes and back out onto the road, where they belong.

WHOA IS ME! WHAT IS TO BECOME OF THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD?

Thursday, January 24th, 2008 at 12:00pm by

Through the Eyes of the Dead’s Malice was one of my favorite albums of 2007 – so I’m more than a little bummed to find out that two of the band’s five members have quit just this month alone. First Carnage Inc. reported on January 7 that drummer Josh Kulick has quit the band, and now Blabbermouth tells us that vocalist Nate Johnson – who had only joined the band in the middle of the Malice recording sessions – has split to join metalcore act Since the Flood. Johnson said of his quitting “it was not because I thought anyone in the band was an asshole, or I had suspicions of anyone stealing money. It just wasn’t my thing. Yes, I am a big fan of death metal… Fast forward 6-7 months later, and I just basically lost interest. I didn’t really enjoy being a death metal vocalist as much as I thought I would.”

This is a real shame, because a) Johnson’s awesome vocals were part of what made Malice so enjoyable, and b) Since the Flood suck (check out their MySpace page if you don’t believe me.) Still, Johnson didn’t even really know TTEOTD when he joined – the story goes that producer Erik Rutan recommended him after the band showed up for the Malice sessions without a vocalist – so I guess the lesson here is that it’s probably best to actually audition and hang out with any potential band members before recording with them.

Mostly, though I hope that TTEOTD can find a new singer and drummer and persevere. It would suck to see a young up and coming band like this torn apart so suddenly and early in their career.

Here’s the band’s David Brodsky-directed, heavily George Romero-influenced video for “Failure in the Flesh” from Malice.

THE RED CHORD, THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD, ALL SHALL PERISH, DESPISED ICON: NEW VIDEO FOOTAGE ON METAL INJECTION

Thursday, January 10th, 2008 at 4:06pm by

The good gents over at Metal Injection have just released a whole shitload of new, never-before-seen video footage of The Red Chord, Through the Eyes of the Dead, All Shall Perish and Despised Icon from their summer tour. The new footage includes interviews, live performances (with soundboard audio!) and classic Metal Injection tomfoolery. The intro below, and all the goodness over at Metal Injection.
