DISSONANCE IS THE NEW PINK

apiary-lostinfocusThis band is my second favorite discovery of the last year, after these guys.

Earlier this Spring, five other people and I saw Apiary tear the Tap Bar at New York’s Knitting Factory to SHREDS, and my conception of what perfectly dissonant metalcore should be hasn’t been the same since.

The band’s precise, angular attack is extremely energetic, and not only incorporates straight-up metal influences but punk and thrash as well, and the amount of creamy dissonance the guitar players throw in almost warrants a new genre in itself.

This is truly a band to watch–their debut full-length, Lost In Focus, is relentless from start to finish. The band’s current line-up (complete with new singer, guitar player, and drummer) is more cohesive than the sticky icky, and currently in the studio working on their sophomore effort, which should prove to be, how you say, radical?

Apiary’s singer Makh Daniels comments on the process of working with TODAY IS THE DAY frontman/recording engineer Steve Austin (who has helmed releases by CONVERGE, LAMB OF GOD, and UNSANE):

“Steve Austin is the fucking man. Not only has he recorded some of our favorite releases, but shit man, that dude is insane. Literally. Hand-stamped and everything. Have you ever heard Today Is The Day? It sounds like a carnival getting torched during the goddamn apocalypse! There are even children still on the rides! That is some fucked up shit! He will probably make us eat glass and record underwater with Great White sharks and shit, I don’t fuckin’ know. He will definitely take our new songs, which are way more punk and nasty, to a whole new level with his recording expertise.”

Apiary hails from San Fran, Califally–not such a metal town per se but in this native New Yorker’s personal opinion the craziest fucking city in North America–and is more than worthy of your heart and soul. Be down.
