Of course it’s impossible to revisit grunge without encountering the movie Singles at some point (or at least the music from said film), and in my recent research, I came across this hilarious post from a website covering “that sweet spot where music and movies meet” called The Playlist about how the Singles soundtrack proves why grunge “wasn’t entirely worthless”.

Upon revisits this film sorta holds up, but it definitely reminds us that Cameron Crowe has always been pretty sappy. I do however have to hand it to any filmmaker that can set a rom-com against the backdrop of the Seattle grunge scene. And the timing couldn’t have been more perfect — what, did Crowe have a crystal ball or is he really that much of a trend-setter? Personally I think the musical choices (and placement) from his last two movies were a little subpar, but Singles really hit a serious mark on the film and music worlds simultaneously, and that’s not an easy thing to do.
