NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: STILL RIDING THAT LIGHTNING

140

Neilstein Soundscam

The Foo Fighters are #1 for the 2nd week in a row; I have yet to hear Wasting Light but everything Dave Grohl puts out is quality and the two songs I’ve heard so far are both slam dunks. Conversely, Hollywood Undead are #2 for the second week in a row; can’t win ’em all, I guess, but at least they’re not #1.

Elsewhere Winds of Plague, Periphery and Loaded had solid debuts, while pretty much any band that was on Revolver’s Golden Gods Awards show experienced a nice little sales bump. Numbers after the fold.

Top Hard Music Chart

1 FOO FIGHTERS – WASTING LIGHT
Last week: 72,106 (69% drop)
Cume: 307,293

A 60-70% drop seems to be the standard from 1st to 2nd week these days. It might seem like a cliff, but 72,000 records would’ve still been enough to be #1 on the overall Soundscan charts several weeks this year (it’s #3 overall this week).

2 HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD – AMERICAN TRAGEDY
Last week: 18,859
Cume: 107,864

With a mere 17% drop, this one could stick around for a while like a fart in a couch cushion.

3 WINDS OF PLAGUE – AGAINST THE WORLD
Last week: 8,747 (debut)

Last week I found myself in a room with current Winds of Plague pre-written-sample button-pusher Alana Potocnik. It was awkward. Very awkward!

4 RISE AGAINST – ENDGAME
Last week: 7,761
Cume: 145,659

Now averaging roughly a 10% drop each week, this one will remain atop the charts for quite some time. It’s a good album, too.

8 ASKING ALEXANDRIA – RECKLESS & RELENTLESS
Last week: 6,818
Cume: 48,964

More like reckless and relentless on the booze! Ohhh snap.

15 AVENGED SEVENFOLD – NIGHTMARE
Last week: 3,947
Cume: 515,120

Quietly achieved gold status a few weeks ago while no one was paying attention and experienced a little sales bump this week likely due to the press around the Revolver Golden Gods Awards. Third (maybe fourth?) gold record (or platinum) in a row for A7X… no small feat these days.

26 AMON AMARTH –  SURTUR RISING
Last week: 2,981
Cume: 26,573

Can someone out there with full-fledged Soundscan access please pull this band’s history for me? Is this already their highest selling U.S. release a mere four weeks in?

41 PERIPHERY – ICARUS EP
Last week: 2,299 (debut)

Nice debut for an EP that features a bunch of remixes, a couple of B-sides, one new song and one album track. If memory serves, the album sold between 4k and 5k when it came out last year, so 2.3k for an associated EP strikes me as really good. Stream new track “Frak the Gods” right here on MS.

42 DUFF MCKAGAN’S LOADED – TAKING
Last week: 2,275 (debut)

No idea this even came out. I guess that’s 2,275 GN’R fanboys.

51 WHITESNAKE – FOREVERMORE
Last week: 2,022
Cume: 21,333

Most of you probably don’t give a shit about Whitesnake but I’m really enjoying watching this unexpected success. I’m actually listening to the album now… and it is most certainly sweet.

76 BLACK VEIL BRIDES – WE STITCH THESE WOUNDS
Last week: 1,446
Cume: 64,738

42% rise from the week prior, no doubt to the Revolver Golden Gods Awards press.

92 METALLICA – RIDE THE LIGHTNING
Last week: 1,284
Cume: 4,411,046

It’s always fun seeing albums like this with a “1” in the “Weeks On” column and it’s also fun to see their cumulative totals. Who knows how many albums this one sold before the Soundscan era began in 1991. I’m guessing this sudden chart re-entry is due to the press surrounding the Big Four show in California.
