NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: BAD MUSIC FOR THE WIN

In the absence of any big metal debuts, this week I decided to run with a question posed last week: how does Amon Amarth’s current chart-buster Surtur Rising stack up against their past releases? After the jump, a look at those numbers.

Foo Fighters were #1 and Hollywood Undead were #2 for the third week in a row on the Top Hard Music charts; elsewhere, Otep Shamaya had a nice debut and shitstains on the ass of the universe like Winds of Plague and Asking Alexandria also had solid weeks. Whoopie.

1 FOO FIGHTERS – WASTING LIGHT
Last week: 34,337
Cume: 341,630

I really need to check this one out; everything Dave Grohl does is good.

2 HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD –  AMERICAN TRAGEDY
Last week: 11,913
Cume: 119,777

3 OTEP –  ATAVIST
Last week: 6,965 (debut)

LOL at people calling us sellouts for running a site skin of a band we trash-talk! Pretty sure that’s the polar opposite of selling out. In any case I perpetually wish that Otep the band could be as cool as Otep the person, ’cause Otep the person is fucking rad (have you read anything she’s written / followed her on Twitter?) but the music, uh….

8 ASKING ALEXANDRIA – RECKLESS & RELENTLESS
Last week: 4,282
Cume: 53,246

A 15% royalty on a $7 net profit per CD = $1.05 per CD sold… times 4,282… equals $4,496. Divided by $150… that’s 30 8-balls Asking Alexandria can buy! Party!

10 MEMPHIS MAY FIRE –  HOLLOW
Last week: 4,041 (debut)

I am kind of but not really aware of this band. Anything worth listening to?

16 TEXAS IN JULY –  ONE REALITY
Last week: 3,259 (debut)

This is the most mediocrest of the most mediocre 6th-gen metalcore in existence. I can’t believe bands like this are still getting signed.

23 WINDS OF PLAGUE – AGAINST THE WORLD
Last week: 2,753
Cume: 11,616

NEILSTEIN SOUNDSCAM: BAD MUSIC FOR THE WIN

31 AMON AMARTH – SURTUR RISING
Last week: 2,347
Cume: 28,920

Last week I asked for and subsequently received Amon Amarth’s entire U.S. chart history so I could compare it to this album (I didn’t get each album’s first week, but I did get release-to-date totals). The top four sellers:

  • Fate of Norns: 44,288
  • Twilight of the Thunder God: 72,646
  • Versus the World: 36,146
  • With Oden On Our Side: 78,394

So, while it appears Surtur Rising has a long way to go to top Amon Amarth’s best it could definitely happen, and passing Versus and Fate seems certain.

51 BETWEEN THE BURIED & ME – PARALLAX: HYPERSLEEP DIALOGUES
Last week: 1,726
Cume: 14,884

Ya know, I feel like this is disappointing for all involved. I wonder if a full-fledged album would perform better than an EP?

55 JONES*DANKO – BELOW THE BELT (BONUS TRACKS V)
Last week: 1,591 (debut)

Not bad for a B-sides album, I guess.

61 WHITESNAKE –  FOREVERMORE
Last week: 1,506
Cume: 22,839

I finally listened to this album. It’s pretty good. Not as good as Ratt’s Infestation good, but pretty good nonetheless.
