Paul Wardingham - Assimilate Regenerate

Another week, another round of fantastic unsigned talent. Let’s take a look at new music by Paul Wardingham, Cloudyhead and Trillion Red after the jump.

  • Paul Wardingham: Where so many solo instrumentalists go wrong, Paul Wardingham has gone overwhelmingly right: awesome, awesome, awesome songs. Lots of folks can play the guitar well these days, but not a lot of folks can write a melody that sticks in your head. Melodies are all that much more important with the absence of vocals for the casual (read: non-musician) listener to latch onto, and Wardingham has tons and tons and tons of memorable ones. I’ve listened to all the music on his MySpace page several times already… I just can’t get enough. [Thanks: Brandon Fountain]
  • Cloudyhead: Cloudyhead doesn’t excel in the songs category the way Paul Wardingham does, but their brand of instru-metal wins in the “what the fuck” department. It’s all over the place, stylistically, time signature-wise, note-wise… in pretty much every way you could imagine. It’s not all that dissimilar from Animals as Leaders in that there’s a lot of crazy fret-board tapping stuff that’s done in a very jazzy manner, but the musical frame is definitely a lot more “out there.” I’m not sure I’d put this on when I’m looking to relax or have some passive music on in the background, but there’s some really interesting stuff here worth checking out. Skip the intro track on their Bandcamp page. [Thanks: Joe Caperon]
  • Trillion Red: Doomy, dark, creepy, ambient… different. If that description interests you in the slightest then check out what this San Francisco outfit has to offer. Their debut EP release Two Tongues is out now.
