YEAH, I DON’T GET IT: WOLD’S BADB

It is no secret that we love and look up to the fine folks over at Decibel. And so when they deem an album worthy to be streamed on The Deciblog, well, I will at the very least give it a listen. After all, Decibel reviews and features have provided me with hours and hours of great listening that might have otherwise escaped my attention, so, yeah, of COURSE I listen to whatever they stream on their blog.

But the Decidudes are, like, both way tr00er and way more smarterer than I am, so sometimes they stream shit the appeal of which is completely lost on me. Like Wold’s Badb, which they are streaming right now.

Even The Deciblog admits that the album is “challenging,” although that might be the understatement of the year. Portal 2 was challenging; Badb is near fucking impossible. It’s by a Canadia black metal duo, and was “originally released in 2004 as a cassette demo limited to 100 copies,” which pretty much tells you when you’re in for: non-music that sounds like it was made by placing a tape recorder in the band’s rehearsal space, and then holding up a mic to that tape recorder as the session was played back, and using that shitty recording of the shitty recording as the final “master.” It’s the kind of thing that makes Mayhem’s Ordo Ad Chao sound like it was produced by Bob Rock.

Of course, it is never outside the realm of possibility that I am just too stupid to get it, and part of me is tempted to give it another shot when I’m in a less-sober state. In the meantime, I am legitimately curious to hear what you guys think of Badb, and if anyone can explain its brilliance to me.

Stream Wold’s Badb here. It’s also available now via Crucial Blast if you want to own it… so I guess there really are people who want to own this!
