Nothnegal

Back in December we premiered a new track from Maldivian blackened death metallers Nothnegal, and now we’re going to take you behind the scenes of the live rigs of both of the band’s talented guitarists. Here they are, in their own words, piece by piece:

Hilarl’s Rig:

ENGL FIREBALL 100W

To put it simply, it might just be one of the most impressive all tube heads I’ve ever used. With two channels that have all the versatility in the world, the amp could fit in anyone’s rig. The Clean Channel displays wonderful mids and highs, and still carries a heavy bottom end that bellows beautifully. The Lead Channel thrusts out high-end gain with ease, while handling mids and lows perfectly with whatever balance you throw at it. It’s hands down worth every penny for the craftsmanship and tone it carries and by far one of the most aptly priced ENGL amps. An investment you can’t regret.

JACKSON SLSMG

Got this guitar a few months ago and I have been using it on the more recent shows and tours. It’s so thin and light, yet the tone stays completely beefy and crisp and the neck itself plays smoother than any other guitar I own. I was amazed when I first got it; it was in standard tuning with the standard 42-9 gauge strings, and I was even more amazed when I set it up for C tuning with 56-11 gauge strings. Feels the same both ways! No loss in tension, tone, playability. Best guitar I’ve ever owned!

JACKSON RR24

Used this when we recorded the Antidote of Realism Demo. It has everythinig you need — you don’t need four different knobs, just one GREAT knob. The floating Floyd Rose with whammy bar just pushes this over the line, not to mention the double locking features. This baby will hardly go out of tune.

BOSS DD-3 DIGITAL DELAY

It does what it’s meant to — create beautiful delays. I use it the most on the middle and long settings and it’s just plain amazing. Couple that with the knobs for feedback, time, and echo and you can get a huge variety of sounds. The “hold” mode is pretty neat as well.

IBANEZ TUBESCREAMER

No other pedal gives the sound I want like this Ibanez Tube Screamer. From just enough bite to full-out growl, this can do it all. With humbuckers it gives very nice warm overdrive easily and naturally sounding, not processed like other pedals out there. With single coils, it growls to make bluesy harmonics to metal screams sound so much better. This is the benchmark overdrive pedal that others are compared to.

BOSS TU-2 TUNER

This is a great tuner pedal and it offers precise tuning in a small amount of time. It’s great because it has two outputs, one to cut your signal off when you need to tune and another that’s a bypass output which will allow you to tune your guitar without cutting your signal off (which is great to run with a volume pedal so you won’t have to keep turning your pedal on and off when you play live).

ROCKTRON REACTION HUSH

I needed a pedal to wipe out the unwanted hiss that I was getting and this pedal did the job. It is built rock-solid and easy to use. Just turn the single control knob until the noise goes away.

ROCKTRON PATCHMATE LOOP 8 FLOOR

I recently got this and have been using it to connect all my pedals; it’s quite simply the best in it’s price range for a looper with midi switching capabilities. It is easier to program than most and is quite cheap for all that it does. Really impressed with the quality.

Fufu’s Rig:

ENGL FIREBALL 100W

The first time I used this amp head was about a year ago when we were on the European tour with Finntroll, and I’m still amazed each time I turn it on to play through it. This thing is so awesome, and powerful as all get out. It’s a perfect fit for rockers and extreme metalheads alike.

JACKSON RR3

I’ve had this guitar for three years. I bought it from a friend, and it’s quite worn out now but continues to bark like a dog and shred from heaven. Although it comes across as a metal-style guitar, dont be fooled; it is very versatile. This thing is loaded right out of the box; the seymour duncan pickups sound great and the Floyd Rose isn’t bad.

TC ELECTRONIC NOVA SYSTEM

I got this system just as it came out and I still love it as much as the day I bought it. I’m really picky about my delays and my reverbs, but some of the settings I’m getting out of this unit just sound so clean and crispy. It’s built like a tank and I know I can bang it around without breaking it. Also, the boost function is very useful for live gigging. With the compressor and the reverb, you’ll get a nice old school sounding reverb. You can do anything with this thing if you fiddle around with it a lot. I’ve found the best way to learn more about it is to play around with it even if you don’t know what you’re doing. Use it through the effects loop in your amp and it’ll sound amazing. Not a fan of the overdrive; I like my overdrive more modern.
