Reunion Mania

MY DAUGHTER, MY SISTER, MY DAUGHTER, MY SISTER

In case there was any doubt that the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame is both artistically and culturally irrelevant, they’ve hired Paul Shaffer, a.k.a.  “David Letterman’s band leader and sidekick,” to be the musical director for their upcoming induction ceremony. And yesterday, someone asked Shaffer a pretty innocuous question not at all pertaining to the one element of this year’s event that anyone gives a shit about. So of course, Shaffer addressed that issue anyway:

MY DAUGHTER, MY SISTER, MY DAUGHTER, MY SISTER

So even though no one actually asked Shaffer about Guns N’ Roses, his response should finally put all the reunion rumors/hopes to rest, right?

Wrong. ‘Cause now not only has Shaffer amended the original tweet, but it seems that he may not have been the one to send it in the first place. From Classic Rock:

“It appears Shaffer’s Twitter account is run in conjunction with Paul Shaffer’s Day In Rock, a daily 60-second radio slot on the history of rock. And someone else connected with this programme might have been responsible for the above tweet.”

“Someone else might have been responsible for the tweet?” Huh? Shaffer either sent it or he didn’t — I don’t really understand why there’s any confusion. Was he not supposed to let the cat out of the bag that GN’R aren’t performing, since that news would very likely hurt the program’s publicity and ratings? Did he just speak too soon, and they really don’t know if GN’R are performing or not? Or did he really just not send it and Classic Rock worded their article poorly? I obviously do not know the answer, but I do find the whole thing, well, suspicious.

In any case, the question of what the what is going on with Guns N’ Roses remains unanswered. I’m still guessing they won’t perform, for the reasons I’ve stated a bajillion times already: Axl Rose hates Slash more than he loves money. But I guess it’s not surprising that nobody actually seems to know what the fuck is going on with these guys. This band has been a drama magnet for twenty-five years, pretty much for the simple reason that Axl Rose is nuts, and can’t get his act together to do shit the way shit is normally done. So it’s not like he’s gonna start committing to things more than twenty minutes in advance now, y’know?
