L’ENFANT SAUVAGE: EVEN GOJIRA’S MAKING-OF VIDEOS ARE BEAUTIFUL

Gojira have released the first episode of a four-part web series chronicling the making of their eagerly anticipated new album, L’Enfant Sauvage. And while the seven-and-a-half minute video features a bare minimum of new music, it’s still really cool; it was shot and edited with far more artistry than most, if not all, other such behind-the-scenes vids we’ve seen. The stylized photography will jump out at you immediately, but it’s worth noting that the talking head interview, usually a staple of these things, is completely absent here. That may have been a decision born of necessity — Joe and Mario Duplantier’s first language isn’t English — but it’s one of the clip’s greatest strengths.

Also fun: if you’ve read the interview I did with The Brothers Duplantier when they were recording L’Enfant Sauvage, you may recall my description of Mario drumming on the studio’s large steel door… well, there’s footage of that in here. The audio starts around 2:09, and the accompanying image begins around 2:26ish.

L’Enfant Sauvage comes out June 26 on Roadrunner.
