This will surprise no one: during the recording sessions for his forthcoming epicly loud album Epicloud (which recently wrapped), Devin Townsend wrote and recorded enough music for two full discs.

This should surprise you: after turning down the opportunity to release a double-disc album when the same “problem” arose from the Ghost sessions, InsideOut Music (Century Media) has agreed to let Dev release a special digipak version of Epicloud — in addition to the regular version — that includes the extra tracks as rough mixes. From Devin’s Twitter, via the PRP:

So when the ‘Ghost‘ album was finished, I had 12 songs that came out here and there, supposed to be Ghost 2, couldn’t convince label etc.. However, Epicloud has 12 extra songs as well, and they have agreed to let me do a digipak version that is essentially a ‘double album’ =] The second disk wont be mixed in the same way, a bit more ‘demo-ish’ in quality, but it completes this cycle without having stragglers after

Two discs of new Devy is obviously better than one disc of new Devy. But it begs the question: at some point half the tracks he recorded had to be whittled down so the single-disc regular edition of Epicloud could be released, and presumably those that make the cut are the best of the bunch. So are the songs on the expanded edition going to be sub-par, or at least not as good as Disc 1? I can’t imagine them being bad, of course, but I wonder how special Disc 2 can ever end up being, with admittedly lower quality mixes too.

Epicloud will come out on September 24th.
