Fort Evil Fruit’s Got the Hookup for Irish Filth

I’ve got a big soft spot for Irish metal. It’s a small scene that positively runneth over with sick death metal, black metal, crust, and doom, and everyone’s just drunk and miserable enough that the bite of desolation and anger bleeds right on through into their records. The considerable amount of time I’ve spent in Dublin was always full of booze, rain, and good times, and I’m already wicked antsy to get back next month for the one-two punch of Redemption Fest and Into the Void Records’ anniversary gig.

Local lads Fort Evil Fruit have been doing a brisk business in committing some of Dublin’s most horrifying sounds to tape. One of the first of their releases that caught my attention was ‘Terminal Eulogy,’ (http://fortevilfruit.bandcamp.com/album/terminal-eulogy) a collection of Wreck of the Hesperus demos, and now they’ve really stepped it up a notch with their latest release – a split cassette between noisy, unsettling Ordnance and Spermicidal’s claustrophobic malevolence. Industrial, drone, black metal, noise – whatever’s going on here is nasty as hell.

Both projects feature members of Wreck of the Hesperus, one of whom, Andrew Cunningham, is so prolific I sort of want to smack him. He’s got his grimy fingerprints smeared all over the gentle pastoral folk of Fern Floor and new death metal project Malthusian with members of On Pain Of Death, Sodb, Altar of Plagues, and Abaddon Incarnate. The former’s tape is sold out, but the latter should be hitting the studio soon, and will be playing their first gig in February supporting Gospel of the Horns, ZOM (another ridiculously solid Dublin death metal crew), and Tome (more sick doom).
