So, Here’s the New Kylesa Song

Kylesa in the studio

Longtime readers of this site know that neither of its editors are big fans of Kylesa. So it will surprise no one to learn that we are not very excited about the new Kylesa joint “Unspoken,” the first to be released from their forthcoming album Ultraviolet, out on May 28th via Season of Mist.

The song, like the band, certainly isn’t bad; there’s nothing to dislike. It’s just that there’s not anything especially worthy of actively liking either. The atmospheric intro is actually pretty cool and reminds me of something you might find on the new Batillus album. But then at 1:18 the song devolves into typical Kylesa; an unspectacular main riff that could’ve been written by any number of other bands, a straight drum beat played by two drummers that could’ve easily been handled by one, a guitar solo starting at 3:40 that sticks more or less to the confines of the pentatonic scale (and doesn’t do much with it), and monotone vocals. All these trespasses would be forgivable if the song was catchy and memorable… except it’s not. So what is it? Lest you label me a complete hater, here’s one more thing besides the intro I actually do enjoy: the harmonized background vocals in the chorus. Nice touch.

Tell me what the fuck it is I’m missing that has everyone so freakin’ excited about this band time and time again. Please. I want to know!
