Dream Theater Are Back in the Building

Dream Theater 2013

Self-titling an album is totally all the rage these days. Especially when you’ve got a new member in the band. “This is really who we are, maaaan!! This album represents us as a band!!” Super cheesy, IMO. Then again this is Dream Theater we’re talking about, a band that’s never shied away from the cheese (and I love them all the more for it).

So: Dream Theater’s new album will be called Dream Theater, it’s their first with new drummer Mike Mangini participating in an active writing role (although he played drums on 2011’s A Dramatic Turn of Events) and it’ll come out on September 24th via Roadrunner.

Of note: Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Rush, James LaBrie solo) is engineering and mixing the album. Paul Northfield engineered the band’s past three albums (he mixed Systematic Chaos and Black Clouds & Silver Linings, too; Andy Wallace mixed A Dramatic Turn of Events), and I wonder why the band didn’t hire him this time around.

Here’s the first of several in-studio videos the band has released documenting the recording process of Dream Theater. I don’t know that we’ll post them all, but this one is certainly a nice overview. The guys seem amped to be recording, and that’s always a good sign! Presumably the album is already in the can and has been handed in to the label by now; I’m stoked to hear it.
