afroHere in sunny Brooklyn, this weekend yields the 9th annual Afropunk Festival and for today and tomorrow Commodore Barry Park will be taken over by all sorts of bands, bikes, food, shopping, yoga, and MORE…..this is FREE and happening right NOW so if you are in New York City get your RSVP on asap and make it happen!

Some musical highlights of metallic note:

Living Colour — the almost 30-year-old NYC band sounds as vibrant as ever

Death — no, not the Florida Death….this band of brothers (literally and figuratively) from the 70s brings back an old-school punk sound

Trash Talk — hardcore punk madness from Sacramento, California

Wicked Wisdom — Jada Pinkett-Smith fronting a metalcore band, sounds hilarious

Unlocking the Truth — 15 year-old thrash band from Brooklyn

In addition, there will be plenty of aural treats of various genres from hip-hop to funk to rock and beyond…..including Chuck D and DJ Lord performing Fear of a Black Planet, Jean Grae, Danny Brown, The Heavy, Saul Williams, Questlove, and many more…

AND — I’m just speculating here — there seems to be a 1.5 hour headlining slot open tonight for a “Secret Guest”…..is it a coincidence that muthafuckin PRINCE is in town this weekend, having already played a secret show on Thursday as well as being rumored to be playing another one tomorrow night elsewhere?  I personally think not, but only time will tell…

See you there!
