Unsigned and Unholy: Tellusian, Paskura, Mellow Bravo

I am particularly stoked on this trio of excellent unsigned bands, even moreso than usual! Not that my taste isn’t always impeccible (naturally!) and that every band I feature here isn’t fantastic. But for some reason these three bands have got me particularly hot n’ bothered today. So let’s get right to it:

This is the third time in as many years I’ve covered Tellusian in this space, and with good reason: this band is phenomenal! Castevet meets Gorguts meets Revocation meets Scale the Summit meets Torche, yet the result sounds entirely original and is easily identifiable as this one band. Someone please sign these guys stat. Here’s their new 7″ Scania:

Listen to “Raven Nulu,” the first track on Paskura‘s new album Spika, and I guarantee you’ll be sold. It starts off chill atmospheric rocker and ends with a passage dominated by a repeating heavy, proggy riff that would make Mastodon proud. Love this band’s drummer — deep pocket, steady groove, tasteful accenting. And the multi-layered, delay-soaked guitars are a great touch that fit this kind of music well.

Mellow Bravo have a good times retro-rock-meets-classic-metal kinda vibe, ala Gypsyhawk, but their jams somehow seem even MORE good-times-y and fun-loving than Gypsyhawk’s, if that’s possible. Big, catchy hooks, killer riffs, excellent twin-guitarmonies, ripping solos… these dudes have it all as far as this sub-genre goes.
