A Day To Remember Common CourtesyA Day To Remember
Common Courtesy deluxe (ATDR)
On a playlist with: Killswitch Engage, God Forbid, Protest The Hero
Listen “Leave All The Lights On” (here)

This garbage isn’t metal. But that’s okay because sometimes we appreciate some non-metal things! No, it’s not okay, actually. Because every once in a while (ahem, Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories or Neutral Milk Hotel’s In The Aeroplane Over The Sea) we really get <3 for non-metal. But sometimes things try to be hard and wicked and fast and all those things we love, but they fail miserably. Welcome to the new low bar: Common Courtesy. Wouldn’t even order a beer for this motherfucker.

Code Augur NoxCode
Auger Nox (Agonia)
On a playlist with: Scar Symmetry, Rammstein, Enslaved
Listen Auger Nox full stream (here)

Want something weird? I mean, Auger Nox isn’t that obtuse, but the vocals kind of make you go like, “wtf mate?” And they’re kind of operatic like Nevermore but then again not really. Are you Australian? And is this djenty at all? I think the fact that I’m having a hard time placing it somewhere means it’s actually pretty decent. But what say you? I think we could spark some interesting discussions about this one! So please don’t flush it right away (I wish you’d do that with most of yer other shit lol), bitch in the comments section. Want theories!

Ephel Duath - Hemmed By Light Shaped By DarknessEphel Duath
Hemmed By Light, Shaped By Darkness (Agonia)
On a playlist with: Hate Eternal, Cynic, Ihsahn
Listen “When Mind Escapes” (here) “Feathers Under My Skin” (here) “Shaped By Darkness” (here)

So there’s this obvious invisible fulcrum between bad vocals and good vocals. So first, I can definitely say that Hemmed By Light, Shaped By Darkness is musically wonderful. Dime a dozen though, cause what makes something great is either a) vocals or b) decent drumming. At some points throughout this album I’m like, “ugh, who the fuck speared Alexi Laiho right in the sack?” And at other points I’m like, “omg this sounds fucking wicked.” So I suppose I should give the benefit of the doubt and say that this album rocks hard and takes goddamn names! But only because it replaces the fulcrum altogether.

generation kill we're all gonna dieGeneration Kill
We’re All Gonna Die (Nuclear Blast)
On a playlist with: Exodus, Hatriot, Bonded By Blood
Listen “Vegas” and “Prophets Of War” (here)

Party music! But it’s a party where limbs are being chopped off and flung around like goddamn nitro balloons. Who the fuck knows? Beats me! But We’re All Gonna Die feels just like it sounds: Goddamn reckless. Ever get those moments where you’re just so pumped you could get ripped in two and wouldn’t give a shit? Yeah, this is what this album is about. Fuck the fact that the riffs are generic and the vocals are, uh, kinda lame. The package works! Fuck the Energizer bunny!

Sapiency TomorrowSapiency
Tomorrow (Eclipse)
On a playlist with: Caliban, Deadlock, Heaven Shall Burn
Listen Tomorrow full stream (here)

Metalcore lol wtf! Okay, I’m just shitting you: Tomorrow is pretty fucking good. (But what is it with vocals this week? Did everybody record while suffering from a cold?) Stream the second track, “Hungry Again,” and tell me it’s not hard, fast, and sensational. Even if you don’t like the melodeath/core mix they have going on here, you’re gonna get a load of those feels when the climax reaches. I love climax. Just wait for it.

Occultist Death SigilsOccultist
Death Sigils (Primitive Ways)
On a playlist with: Ulcerate, Rotten Sound, Enabler
Listen Death Sigils full stream (here)

So this year, Ulcerate’s Vermis stole my heart — the diseased, sick part of it anyway. Like that album, Occultist’s Death Sigils makes you ill on the inside. It’s not as creamy or hard as Vermis, but just as sharp and uncompromising. It’s schizo as fuck! Can’t really tell what’s going on, and those vocals are hotter than fucking molten lava. Overall, good shit, and you should rock it all day. Fuck the rest!
