Well, this is interesting: two of the four bassists from the Big Four, Megadeth’s Dave Ellefson and Anthrax’s Frank Bello, apparently began writing music together while doing all those fun Metal Masters clinics (the next of which is coming up in January, incidentally), and will now self-release the results under the name Altitudes & Attitude. Their debut three-song EP will come out January 14. Bello handles vocals, while he and Ellefson share guitar and bass duties; A Perfect Circle’s Jeff Friedl played drums on the EP, and one of the songs features guest leads by Gus G. of Firewind and Ozzy fame.

In a statement, Bello says that “We thought it would be cool to let fans hear something they wouldn’t expect from us,” and he ain’t kidding; Altitudes & Attitude isn’t even metal! It’s hard rock, so it’s definitely in metal’s wheelhouse, but still. If you’re hoping to get caught in a mosh or listen to a symphony of destruction, you’re shit outta luck here.

The EP is now streaming here (alas, it’s not embeddable). I wanna listen to it a few more times before passing judgment… an initial listen hasn’t knocked my socks off, but it’s definitely not bad… certainly way better than Super Collider, yuk yuk.

And finally, here’s a lo-res of the cover art:
