Cynic Let “True Hallucination Speak”

Cynic - Kindly Bent to Free Us

Say, did you catch the interview we did with Cynic’s Paul Masvidal on the most recent episode of the MetalSucks Podcast? Paul proved once again that he’s one of the most interesting minds in metal, going beyond just “new Cynic album yadda yadda” and delving into his emotional state, psychology as a result of his upbringing, the dynamic of his long-standing relationship with bandmate Sean Reinert and all sorts of other interesting tangents. The chat could’ve gone on for hours and I would’ve been perfectly OK with that. Maybe one of these days he’ll revive the expansive Metta Mind Journal column he wrote for MetalSucks a few years back? Hint hint if you’re reading this, Paul.

For now we’ll make due with a new Cynic song, which is still pretty sweet. I’m really digging the vibe of the new album Kindly Bent to Free Us; it’s got moments of heaviness, but it’s mostly just chilled out fusion metal in that patented Cynic style, very ethereal, very atmospheric. As MS scribe Sammy O’Hagar stated in his official review of the record, it feels like yet another evolution of this always-changing band. “True Hallucination Speak” is a perfect embodiment of all of that. Check it out in lyric video form below.

Listen to the album’s title track here if you haven’t yet. Kindly Bent to Free Us comes out February 14 on Season of Mist; pre-order the album here.
