He Is Legend Something Witchy

Rob Flynn of Machine Head so loves He Is Legend’s 2009 album It Hates You that he named it his favorite album of 2013. You read that correctly. Funny that may seem, but it’s easy to relate to Flynn’s enthusiasm: He Is Legend’s hooky, brooding, heavy rockcore — same ballpark as Every Time I Die, same superhuman vibe as Deftones — is so lovable, its impact quick and lasting and appealing to both genders (!). Like Flynn, you celebrate their excellence like you’ve just discovered time travel.

But at the same time, you despair at HIL’s low profile, the product of bad luck, bad associations, and bad business. For like all huge bands that you’re proud to love, HiL scores an staggering ratio of brawn to accessibility and of fluency to creativity. It qualifies them for a career as one of heavy music’s biggest bands. Like, Mastodon big, Alice In Chains big, Tool big. But nope, our aforementioned time machine is known to too few people yet would thrill so many.

Today, after a half-decade, a hiatus, a change of drummers, a false start, and an eternity of waiting, He Is Legend finally unveils a new song. Titled “Something Witchy,” it convenes It Hates You‘s production team (Mitch Marlow) and arrives on the same record label (Tragic Hero) — and seems to use similar thread to make us a scarf to layer over IHY‘s sleek jacket. Fucking yes!! Crank it up here via Lambgoat or stream it below.
