The New Rabbits Video is “So Fake It’s Real”

Director Whitey McConnaughy is best known for the series of hilarious videos he made with Red Fang. And while the clip he has now directed for Rabbits’ “So Fake It’s Real” isn’t at all funny, it’s still really rad — because the whole thing was made on technology no more recent than 1985 (an old Bolex camera with 16mm film, which McConnaughy processed himself, a vintage Fisher Price Pixel Vision camera, etc.). That means that all the grit you see in the video is real, and not a filter/effect added in post, as is often the case with digitally photographed videos trying to achieve a similar aesthetic. Not only does it look killer, but it’s totally appropriate for the band and the song, who are very much in the same raw-sounding vein as Mastodon and the aforementioned Red Fang. In fact, according to Gear Gods reports that Rabbits’ new album, Untoward, was tracked on analog: “The band recorded live, direct to tape, with the only exceptions being overdubs and solos.”

Rabbits’ Untoward is out now on Lamb Unlimited. If you wanna learn more about how McConnaughy made this awesome video, head over to Gear Gods, where they have some cool behind-the-scenes photos and explanations from the man himself.
