Not Quite Metal?

Pink Floyd-Inspired [Non-]Metal Doubleshot: Contact and Burnt Belief

Contact - First ContactYou guys: PINK FLOYD ARE COMING OUT WITH A NEW ALBUM IN ONE MONTH! This is bananas levels of insanity since it hasn’t happened in my adult lifetime. OK, so Roger Waters isn’t involved. And, yeah, it’s built from very old demos that are being reworked. And fine, I concede that they’re all old men now and it’s probably not going to be very good. BUT STILL! NEW FLOYD! AHHHHHHHHHH

Yes, I’m aware this has nothing to do with metal. And yet it has ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING to do with metal.

Anyway:

If Endless River contained “First Contact,” the following song by new outfit Contact (no, that’s not a typo), I’d be happy as a clam. Those Rick Wrightian keys! Razor sharp, super tight. And that vaguely Gilmour-esque solo at the end. It’s like something off of 1977’s Animals… shit, I’m pretty sure that two-chord progression that closes out the track is a deadringer for the middle section of “Dogs.” All that’s missing is the barking. The duo consists of Zombi/Majeure drummer AE Paterra, whose work we’ve covered on MS before, and UK film composer Paul Lawler. First Contact comes out on October 28th via Temporary Residence.

PopMatters is streaming a new song by Burnt Belief, another duo consisting of U.K. bassist Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree) and U.S. guitarist Jon Durant. The Floyd worship is a bit less heavy-handed here, but it’s present nonetheless, weaved into a modern jazz fusion backbone. Fans of Trioscapes, T.R.A.M., Mestis etc oughtta go nuts for this. Etymology comes out October 21st via Alchemy Records.
