Video: Revocation Drummer Interviews His Parents
Revocation drummer Phil Dubois-Coyne’s parents lay out plenty of stereotypical parentisms in this Metal Injection interview: Phil’s mom was legitimately scared everyone would die at a basement show she attended in the band’s early days and gives Phil the evil eye when she mentions people smoking cigarettes down there, while Phil’s dad talks about showing up to a crusty warehouse show in a suit, and getting a speeding ticket on the way back from another one.
But Mr. and Mrs. Dubois and Coyne also display a remarkable knowledge of the band’s catalog and reveal themselves as legitimate fans of the band. Says Phil’s mom about the group’s latest album Deathless, “It’s almost like classical music. You’re building layers of rhythms and chords on top of each other and threading themes throughout. The layering of the drums and the syncopation, I love the way it weaves together.” Which is exactly what I’ve been trying to communicate to my mom about metal all these years! Meanwhile, Phil’s dad is a little more direct: “Frankly, I think the work that you and Dave do together is fucking incredible.”
