“Pangaea”: New Convulse Song Doesn’t Sound Very Convulsive

No one is happier than I am that Finland’s Convulse are active again — but holy shit, did the band’s new song, “Pangaea,” ever catch me off-guard. The band has always played straight-up death metal, not melodeath — and that includes the material on their 2013 reunion release, Evil Prevails. But “Pangaea” sounds decidedly slicker and, well, more modern than any of the band’s other material. Don’t get me wrong — I still think “Pangaea” is pretty good, and it is most definitely not some Cryptopsy-esque attempt to capitalize on current trends. But it definitely took me a few listens to get used to it.
