Ghost Take You “From the Pinnacle to the Pit”

Ghost - MelioraGhost’s new single, “From the Pinnacle to the Pit,” may very well catch you off-guard — it certainly surprised the heck outta me. Right from the second that slithery, groovy bass starts playing, you know you’re listening to something that’s really different for Ghost. Sure, it’s still retro 70s rock, but it’s vibe isn’t much like Ghost’s other material… it’s so much more menacing. Ghost are one of those metal bands that catch a lot of shit for not really being a metal band, but there are elements of this song that are undeniably metal, and it wouldn’t take very much re-adjusting to turn it into a song more appropriate for conventional metal band.

Put another way: usually, Ghost sound like a Black Öyster Beatles, but on “From the Pinnacle to the Pit,” Ghost sound like Purple Zeppelin.

I dig it. And I wonder how much more of the band’s new album, Meliora, will sound like this (as opposed to its debut single, “Cirice,” which sound more traditionally Ghostly)?

I guess we’ll find out when the album is released on August 21! In the meantime, enjoy “From the Pinnacle to the Pit” below. You can get upcoming North American tour dates for Ghost here.
