Steel Panther House Of Blues final

Waiting in line to get in to House Of Blues in West Hollywood is like queueing for a blockbuster-themed roller coaster. Its entrance is down ’round back, its exterior resembles a swamp shack, it’s kinda sneaky and incongruous on Sunset Blvd. That may be part of why it’s the site of really happy energy, a vibe that reaches the sidewalk on Olive or whatever street that is beside it that plummets down toward Santa Monica Blvd. Inside it’s further from “theme park-ish” and closer to “touristy,” but a concertgoer overlooks that in exchange for super sound and sight lines. All told: Great venue.

Metal bands played awesome there: I remember Behemoth, Watain, and The Devil’s Blood like it was yesterday. Devin Townsend, Cynic, and BTBAM each had a career night there one Sunday. Tons more. But even more than those shows, we may best remember the act that will close the final day of operations for HOB Sunset. It’s a band that we might’ve seen at HOB like a million times, though not so frequently as the band’s growing stature eventually made it impossible for them to be tethered to L.A. all year. That final day is today and that band is awesome Steel Panther.

It’s a brilliant booking. Like many bands, they’re awesome. But, unlike any other band, Steel Panther is also hilarious and surrounded by nudity. Plus, tonight could be fun at the moments they’re joined by friends like Scott Ian, Billy Ray Cyrus, and Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger. So for the great venue, the extra pizzazz, and for the wisdom to end their 20 years in West Hollywood the best possible way — ie. with an awesome farewell party at which we can expect enormous guests and famous tits — we tip our MetalSucks cap to the HOB Sunset team. Stream it live here.
