Mike Patton’s Nevermen: A Little TOO Ironic?

What to make of Neverman, the new project from Mike Patton, TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe, and rapper Adam “Doseone” Drucker? It’s pretty good, but it may ultimately be too ironic/above it all for even the most ardent of Patton supporters. Like, look at this photo of the trio:

NevermenHoly crap, an ironic Scientology shirt!!! How have I never seen anyone pull that shit before? It probably won’t be long before kid in Williamsburg is wearing one of those. I plan to stay one step ahead of the game by wearing the rotted flesh of a Jonestown corpse as a straight-brim trucker hat. Also, if that Whitesnake shirt Drucker is wearing is a joke, I’m offended.

Of course, none of that shit would matter if they kept that attitude out of the music, but they don’t: very early in the track, Patton starts chanting, “Go Pittsburgh! Go Pittsburgh!” I cannot for the life of me figure out why. Adebimpe is wearing a Pittsburgh shirt in the promo photo, but none of these guys are actually from Pittsburgh. So, uh… what the heck is going on here?

ANYWAY, if you can look past all that nonsense, yeah, the song ain’t bad.

Neverman’s debut should be out sometime in the fall.
