Watch This Fascinating Three-Minute Documentary on the Last Remaining Tape Cassette Factory

cassettesGot an outdated business model that harks back to a bygone era? Just stick with it long enough to be the last man standing and you might benefit from a nostalgic resurgence.

That’s precisely what happened with National Audio Company, a cassette manufacturing plant in Springfield, MO, who watched all their competitors wither when the format fell out of favor, bought up all the failed companies’ assets, and continued trucking along with audiobooks and blanks. When bands starting becoming interested in the format again a few years back they were perfectly positioned to reap the benefits.

Watch a fascinating three-minute video about NAC below, courtesy of Bloomberg Business, which comes off as half “How It’s Made” and half nightly news feature. The only part I think the plant’s employees have wrong is that they credit a renewed interest in cassettes to an appreciation of the “analog sound,” which is not the case — no one is listening to these fucking things, they’re just collector’s items! — but it’s still pretty awesome to see these guys still kicking and taking pride in their work.

The plant manufactured those Metallica cassettes that came out earlier this year.
