I don’t mean to be flip here, but… if you still have doubts as to the cause of Scott Weiland’s death last week at age forty-eight, this oughta put you straight: TMZ, who have obtained a copy of the search warrant police used to investigate Weiland’s tour bus after he died, reports that the former Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver vocalist was not only in possession of cocaine at the time of his death, but was also in possession of…

  • Xanax
  • Buprenorphine, “a synthetic opiate painkiller”
  • Two brands of sleeping pills
  • Viagra
  • “[O]ne bag of a green, leafy substance,” which we can assume was weed
  • Ziprasidone, a drug used to treat bipolar disorder and schizophrenia

Obviously the weed didn’t kill Weiland, and he actually was bipolar, so he had a good reason to have the Ziprasidone on hand. As for all that other shit… well, if you’re gonna take that kinda stuff, you have to be really careful about how you mix it. Mixing Buprenorphine and Xanax, for example, is dangerous, and adding additional sleeping meds only amplifies that danger; a similar cocktail killed the actor Heath Ledger in 2008. Even the Viagra is potentially dangerous (it fucks with your blood pressure) if used with a substance such as Buprenorphine.

The official toxicology report for Weiland probably won’t be ready until early 2016 (those things take awhile). We’ll know then precisely what combination of these drugs took Weiland’s life.
