Video: Here’s A Play-Through of Allegaeon Covering Rush

0

In a recent piece I wrote about overcoming metal exhaustion, I discussed listening to bands from your past that you consider “a little ridiculous and kind of stupid,” and one of the bands I included amongst those was Rush. Because, let’s face it, whether you like them or not, Rush is pretty ridiculous.

And man, people came out of the woodwork to express their butthurt over it! How dare I insult the leaders of proggy neopagan Canadian dad rock? I must be close-minded or an idiot (these people, of course, we’re quick to shit all over Cinderella and Powerman 5000 as “not real music,” thus illustrating their broad and open palates).

So, for all of you out there who got upset that I would call Geddy & Co. anything other than “seminal,” here’s Colorado’s very talented Allegaeon covering Rush’s “Subdivisions,” featuring new vocalist Riley McShane. It’s proggy and soaring and full of funky rhythms — everything that a humorless Rush fan will nod sagely at. And hey, the video that comes with it shows us the band playing through the song entirely, so you can nerd out about gear and the process while you’re at it.

Enjoy “Subdivisions” below. I’m still waiting for the Oceano cover of “Tom Sawyer.”

Allegaeon’s new album, Proponent for Sentience, will be out September 23 on Metal Blade. You can pre-order it here. The band will also be part of Max and Igor Cavalera’s Roots tour starting next month; get dates here.
